Segun Adebutu @ 47: Ogunsan extols oil magnate

In what can be said to be a show of admiration, the Chairman of Executive Group and Board Member, Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), Dr Ayo Ogunsan, has extolled oil mogul, Segun Adebutu on the occasion of his 47th birthday, describing him as an “entrepreneur and philanthropist par excellence”.

Ogunsan, who recently penned a birthday message to Adebutu, made available to newsmen, said Adebutu deserves commendation, having excelled in many areas of business endeavours as well as philanthropy.

His words: “On a glorious day like this, in history, my amiable brother, Mr Segun Adebutu, was born. His golden birth was to herald a monumental gift for humanity, and this is no gainsaid.

“As a graduate of Economics with a touch of uniqueness, your entrepreneurial dexterity has been highly responsible for your tremendous growth in business. Your world-class conglomerate with interests in shipping, mining, construction, infrastructure, real estate, telecommunications and entertainment is a motivation for the younger generation behind you. For this, I celebrate you, sir.

“Here is a perfect gentleman who shares a lot of good qualities with his father, the great Chief Kessington Adebutu who is ultimately known for entrepreneurship, industrialisation and philanthropy. He is always seen putting smiles on the faces of people in society. I must say I am proud to be a disciple of Baba Kessington Adebutu who is more of a dad, role model, leader and mentor to me.

“Today, on this special occasion of your birthday, I recall you founded Oladiran Olusegun Adebutu Foundation (OOAF) with the aim of giving back to society. As an unapologetic philanthropist posed to ameliorating poverty among his people, while also solving the problem of basic amenities of life, it was exigent and contingent for the foundation to be birthed.

“You seem to be a staunch believer in the saying that we rise by lifting others. Little wonder why you have continued to record sterling success in all your endeavours.

“Having started small with Petrolex Oil and Gas, it can only take a man of vision and passion to grow a company currently building the second-largest refinery in sub-Saharan Africa. What a great feat is worthy of all adoration!

“Sitting atop a conglomerate, Mr Segun Adebutu has displayed an enviable life of a vast entrepreneur and a philanthropist par excellence. To burst the brain, you have maintained your humble and unassuming personality which is quite unpopular.

“Sir, may I wish you a blissful birthday celebration, while praying to God to continue to increase you in all of your endeavours.”

SSANU warns of another strike in varsities

    By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned of another looming strike across universities.

It blamed the Presidency for the incessant strike in universities, warning workers and various unions will go on another strike soon until the right things are done.

The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ịkwọ(AE-FUNAI) chapter of SSANU gave the warning while presenting its memoranda to the school’s visitation panel.

Presenting the association’s memoranda to the panel’s Chairman, Amb Usman Sariki, the AE-FUNAI SSANU chairman, Emma Chigbata, said university system is dying in the country.

He identified poor funding as well as divide- and -rule system by the Federal government in its dealings with various unions as some of the reasons for the rot in the system.

“The Federal Government has no respect for agreements. Many agreements it entered into with various unions none of them have been fulfilled,” he said.

He warned if the situation is not properly handled, it may lead to break down of law and order in the universities.

“Very soon students will rise against staff and teachers because of incessant strikes,” he warned.

Chigbata expression pessimism at the ability of the visitation panels set up for all the Federal government universities to solve the problem.

He also lamented workers salaries were slashed following the introduction of the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS) by the Federal government.

“IPPIS slashed the salary of workers. It is now peanuts. Staff cannot afford to feed and pay house rents. Staff now borrow money to feed and take care of their needs,” he lamented.

Responding, Amb Saraki said the panel is not an investigative panel but a fact-finding panel.

“We are not here to witch hunt anybody but to find out the true situation of things and advice government appropriately on how to improve the university system,” he said.

  • ABCHealth, UNECA sign partnership to improve health in Africa

ABCHealth, UNECA sign partnership to improve health in Africa

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth) have signed a partnership to develop two key initiatives: the Healthcare and Economic Growth in Africa (HEGA 2) report, and the West Africa ‘African Continental Free Trade Area’ (AfCFTA)-anchored Pharma Initiative.

The partnership between the two organisations, which will be jointly executed, is premised on the belief that every African has an undeniable right to quality, accessible and affordable healthcare. The relationship between health and economic growth has been effectively demonstrated by the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is now clear that more private sector involvement is required to support governments’ efforts on health.

The Healthcare and Economic Growth in Africa (HEGA 2) is a follow up to the HEGA 1 report, which analysed a strategic direction for African countries to better engage with the private health sector to accelerate improvements in health.

It examined Africa’s healthcare challenges and highlighted opportunities for the private sector. The report was launched in February 2019 on the margins of the 32nd African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government Summit in Addis Ababa. HEGA 2 aims to leverage innovation and extend the focus on building resilient national health systems in a post-COVID-19 era. The publication will offer robust evidence-based policy solutions to strengthen and build resilient healthcare and health infrastructure on the continent.

The West Africa AfCFTA-anchored Pharma Initiative is the blueprint for the local production of drugs and medical equipment across West Africa. The initiative focuses on strengthening the supply side of West Africa’s health sector by mobilising investment and capital to develop domestic production of internationally accepted standards and quality. This initiative is an extension of the work that ECA conducted in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) and selected countries, which involved advocacy for local production of maternal and child care medicines; pooled procurement of same; and ensuring regulatory harmonisation and quality standards of medicines and products.

Regarding the partnership, Aliko Dangote, Co-Founder of ABCHealth, noted: “With the coalition that ABCHealth is building across the continent, responsible business leaders and philanthropists will have a platform that enables them to make sustainable, large scale investments in health that transform African economies and people.”

Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, ABCHealth Chairman, stated: “We are confident of the impact this partnership will bring to bear on the continent. It is our firm belief that with the public and private sectors working together, combining political will with business knowledge, Africa’s health sector can be built to the point, where it will deliver affordable health to Africans in an equitable manner.”

Vera Songwe, ECA Executive Secretary, stated: “Investing in health is not just a social good, it also makes a good business case.  Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, business opportunities in the healthcare and wellness sector in Africa were estimated to be $259 billion by the year 2030, with the potential to create 16 million jobs. The pharmaceutical industry alone was estimated to be US$60 billion in 2020 and is still growing. The AfCFTA-anchored Pharma Initiative represents lucrative private sector investment and innovation opportunities that will change lives, reduce poverty and contribute to Africa’s inclusive and sustainable economic development.”
