‘Discrimination against black women should stop’

Executive Director Grace Schools Lagos, Mrs. Iyiola Olatokunbo Edun, speaks on some unpleasant experiences she faced as black woman during overseas trips, the role of women in the society, Parental responsibilities, among others. Excerpts:

Experience as a black woman overseas

I must confess that I am sad at the way a black woman is being treated in the world. I had travelled before that I had terrible experiences in the hands of air hostesses. I usually travel business class but to my utter dismay, the air hostess thought I could not afford business class.

I was pointed to the back toilet to use and when I came back to occupy my seat in the business class, she started apologising. She responded that she thought I was flying economy class. This has been a consistent occurrence to me and I felt bad just because I am a black woman, I cannot afford luxury or I should be so poorly treated as an inferior being?

I had also been embarrassed like this before in Amsterdam where I was told to go back and queue on the economy line and not on the priority line by the Airline staff- a man. This same incident also happened in Spain when a woman believed that I could not be on the priority line when the announcement was made for priority category passengers to queue.

We are poorly rated not only as women but black women. I have also been embarrassed at Atlanta airport alongside my son when we were asked whether we missed our way on the priority line. These are serious issues that being a black woman create as if we are inferior to the whites. This is one major reason I always encourage women to rise to any challenge and seek to overcome the odds against them

Roles of women in the society

I was brought up by a very strict mum. My mother had strength in talking which she used in passing across key messages. My mum didn’t give anything on a platter of gold. She ensured that I work to earn whatever I deserve. I was exposed to several things through my mother and she ensured that I had the basic fundamentals of becoming a woman of repute.

It has become imperative for women to create an enabling environment and monitor their children. The role of women cut across the home and the society. It is also important for women to know the peculiarities of every individual child. Women should engage in profitable ventures and gain inspiration to live a fulfilled life. It is important for women never to be discouraged in any way.

There are myriad of challenges facing women in our society but women should not quit. I have had strong women in my life who have also provided the platform for me to rise beyond my challenges. My Master’s thesis was on women and how they cope with challenges generally. It is important for women to have confidence in themselves. Women should strive to be independent and never be a burden on the society. In Nigeria being a woman is at disadvantage because we are referred as second class citizens already. Women should also endeavor to obtain sound education, which no one can take away from them. They need to have the courage and confidence to face life.

They should not see themselves as inferior in any way. A lot of women are undergoing stress and they are unable to seek professional counsel and this causes serious threat to their health. They should belong to a network of positive women who can tackle challenges together and discuss issues.

Women should seek help when they have challenges. There are professionals to seek and find people. There are professional counselors in churches. They should also engage in hobbies and some activities that will give them inspiration. The older women should also provide counseling for the younger ones in order to support them in life

    Parental roles and responsibilities

Parents need to be alive to their responsibilities. A lot of Nigerian parents have abandoned their functions to the schools. It is the responsibility of the parents to teach their children basic values such as politeness and courtesy. It should be emphasised that the school is meant to reinforce the training parents give their children.

Parents should not abdicate their responsibilities to the school. Parents should teach their children basic values so that schools can deliver qualitative learning. Charity actually begins at home. Parents blame schools for performance but they also need to be involved in the learning process. It has been observed over time that parents are non-challant about the performance of their children academically.

The other side of it is that they (parents) blame the school while neglecting their own roles and responsibilities. Parents need to exercise patience in rating schools and this is more of a Nigerian mentality as parents are quick to blame schools for poor standard. Teachers need to be accorded respect as we are more like parents to the children.

Sanwo-Olu: Lagos completed 1,097 school projects in two years

By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie and Oyebola Owolabi

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said his administration has completed over 1,097 projects in 970 primary and secondary schools in the past two years.

The government also built and rehabilitated 322 dilapidated schools – including five new schools – and supplied 87,000 dual composite units of furniture to primary and secondary schools.

He spoke on Thursday at inauguration of a new block of 10 classrooms at the Akintan Junior Grammar School, Surulere – one of four school projects he inaugurated.

Sanwo-Olu, who had earlier visited the other three schools (Fazil Omar Senior High School, weeIwaya; Onike Girls’Junior High School, Yaba and Igbobi Junior High School, Simply), also said that 100 Lagos schools would soon get fibre optics installed for internet connection.

He said the investment in education was his administration’s effort to build the right quality of human capital needed to service Lagos as a mega city.

He said: “We are flagging off these school infrastructural projects to deliver 300 classrooms and seven new hostel blocks in some of our schools.

“The projects being commissioned today include a block of 18 classrooms with administrative offices, library, laboratory block, toilets, and borehole.

“A block of 10 classrooms is also being presented to Akintan Junior Grammar School. I am delighted to inform you that this will be a continuous exercise until all the promised infrastructural projects have been delivered to the beneficiary schools.

“These projects will improve the learning and teaching environment in our public schools.

“Education is still the most potent tool of empowerment, and one of the most tested ways to close the gap between poverty and wealth; it provides individuals with the necessary knowledge and skillset to actualise their potential and maximize opportunities in life.

“The vital role of education in the growth and development of a megacity like ours has made it imperative for us to ensure that our children have access to quality education and an enabling environment for excellent learning.

“This administration is convinced that teaching and learning can only take place effectively in a conducive environment; this explains our commitment to the provision of new structures and the rehabilitation of existing ones.

“I am glad to note that our investments in education has been yielding positive results. Our students’ performance has improved in examinations, national and international competitions. They also have improved morals, etiquette, and confidence in public speaking.”

Regarding the internet connection project, Sanwo-Olu said the 100 schools would be activated by month end, while assuring that the faculty would get to all schools.

“We have done what we call our metropolitan fibre optics. We are currently in about 65 schools. Before the end of this month we will be in 100 schools. And we will go round to commission internet fibre connectivity in 100 schools in Lagos State. What that will do for you is to give you access to the world,” he said.

Education Commissioner Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo said Sanwo-Olu had delivered on his campaign promises to deliberately focus on education as a major pillar of his THEMES agenda.

Chairman Special Committee for the Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), Mr. Hakeem Smith, counseled students to take care of the new facilities.

Chairman, House Committee on Education, Okanlawon Sanni praised the government for its efforts but called for the establishment of more secondary schools given the disparity between the number of primary schools – 1016 – compared to about 365 junior secondary schools.

Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) Wahab Alawiye-King described the projects as part of efforts to enhance education in the state.

Market demolition: Traders, council disagree over alleged court order

    By Robert Egbe

The Olorunda Oyinlola Market Association of Festac Town, Lagos has accused the Amuwo Odofin Local Government (LGA) and its chairman Valentine Buraimoh of disobeying an Ikeja High Court order restraining them from further action on the destroyed market premises.

The traders said Justice Sendoten Ogunsanya on January 25, 2021, ordered parties in suit ID/9827/LMW/2020 to maintain the status quo pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice for Interlocutory Injunction by the traders.

Speaking through their lawyer, Mr Adesina Ogunlana, they told The Nation that the order followed the LGA’s demolition of the market on December 12 – despite the pendency of the suit – destroying goods worth over N25billion and reducing the 15 acres of property to rubble.

Adesina said: “Even before the demolition of the market took place, the Market Association had approached the court for intervention and succour in Suit: ID/9827/LMW/2020. This case is before the Ikeja High Court per Hon. Justice Ogunsanya.

“On January 25th, 2021, the Honourable Court granted an order directing all parties involved to maintain status quo, as at things stood on that very day, which was just a situation that the 1st Defendant, the Amuwo Odofin Local Government had destroyed the N25 billion market but had not commenced development.

“When this order was made, the claimants were happy trusting that the Defendants would be obedient to the court order. Alas, the opposite was the case. Since that day the 1st Defendant started building furiously on the market…”

According to him, despite all the warnings of the court, that the 1st Defendant should stop further construction on the Olorunda Oyinlola Market, the Amuwo Odofin Local Government led by Mr Valentine Buraimoh deliberately ignored the order and have continued building there furiously, day and night…

But the Amuwo Odofin Local Government’s counsel, Mr D.F. Ogunmade denied the allegations, saying that the traders were being “economical with the truth.”

He said there was no court order restraining the LGA or its chairman from building on the land and challenged the traders to produce the order, adding that “they were just going about maligning my client’s name.”

Ogunmade further stated that following a complaint by the traders, Mr Buraimoh had honoured the police invitation to explain recent developments.

Ekiti 2022: Fayose curses aspirants opposing anointed candidate

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Ado-Ekiti

Former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose has rained curses on some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirants opposed to his preferred governorship choice, Chief Bisi Kolawole, for the 2022 poll.

In a viral video on various social media platforms obtained by our correspondent, Fayose, during a campaign tour of Ijero, invoked curses on them.

He said in the video: “Those contesting the PDP ticket with you should fall sick. Those who are going to herbalists to hypnotise you should fall sick. And those in higher authorities they depend on, God should unseat them”.

Defending his actions, Fayose said: “I believe I have not done anything wrong for doing that for Kolawole. When Professor Eleka was contesting I laid my hands on his head and I prayed that God should fight those who were trying to oppose his victory.

“Even myself while contesting in 2014 against Fayemi, I rained curses on my enemies that God should subdue them.

“So the same thing I did for Kolawole I am still maintaining that whoever opposes him God should subdue them.

“Even if it is me, my wife or anyone, God should subdue them because this is a political contest”.

Fayose’s political camp under the aegis Osoko Political Association had been in disarray for sometimes with many of its associates up in arms against the ex-Governor for adopting Kolawole against alleged agreement reached to throw the contest wide open.

But reacting to the viral video, a political aide of one of the leading aspirants and former Deputy Governor, Prof. Olusola Eleka, Adebisi Adeola, described the incident as a show of sheer rascality by Fayose.

Adeola stated the ex-Governor was desperate to govern Ekiti by proxy going by the political happenings in the party, saying Fayose’s support for Kolawole’s candidature “was not in the best interest of PDP but rather to satiate his insatiable selfish interest”.

He blamed the ex-Governor for the crisis rocking the party, saying “the only problem PDP is grappling with in Ekiti is Fayose’s shenanigans to pocket the party to his own benefit, not minding its future”.

Adeola claimed Fayose’s inherent style of bullying people would be decimated in the coming PDP governorship primaries, saying party members were ready to disgrace him this time around.

“PDP belongs to all of us and the party is not Fayose’s property or the wishy-washy followers to do hatchet job of the opposition.

“The height of this is that Mr Fayose has been putting calls through to a number of loyalists of Professor Eleka and raining curses on them to withdraw their support which had been rebuffed,” he said.

Adeola said the ex-Deputy Governor would proceed with his ambition despite Kolawole’s adoption by his former boss, vowing “Eleka won’t drop out of the race and would be ready to face Kolawole at the PDP governorship primary next year.”

He called on the Secondus-led NWC and leadership of Southwest PDP to rein in Fayose, warning his actions could undermine the party victory in the governorship poll.

Australian regulator links 5 blood clot cases to AstraZeneca COVID-19

    Agency Reporter

Australia’s medical regulator has linked five new cases of blood clotting to the AstraZeneca Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine.

John Skerritt, head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration, on Thursday announced that five recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine had developed clotting and low platelets.

The patients include two men in their 70s, one in 60s, and two women in their 50s and 60s.

“You’ll notice that all of those people are over 50, but if you step back and think about who is now getting the AstraZeneca vaccine, it is only with a few rare exceptions it is only people over 50,’’ Skerritt told reporters.

“So it is obvious that future cases will be in the over 50s,’’ he added.

It takes the number of confirmed cases of the rare clotting disorder in Australia to 11 since the start of the country’s vaccine rollout.

Skerritt said that for every 1,000 COVID-19 vaccines administered in Australia the TGA receives between six and seven reports of adverse reactions.

“These are people who have felt unwell or have presented to a doctor or hospital after being vaccinated,’’ he said.

As of Thursday, there had been 2.47 million vaccine doses administered in Australia.

The government had endorsed a new vaccine rollout plan in April that will fast-track vaccinations for over 50s “by better utilising the available stock of AstraZeneca doses’’ and offer the Pfizer vaccine to people under 50 years. (Xinhua/NAN)

Panel calls for memorandum at FCE (Tech) Akoka

By Gbemisola Adesola, and Dorcas Aluko

Workers of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, have until Friday to submit their memoranda to the Presidential Visitation Panel inaugurated by the Federal Government last week.

Chairman of the seven-man panel and wife of the former Ondo State governor, Mrs. Olufunke Agagu, said when she met with workers that the memoranda would help the panel’s complete its assignment and submit its report, which is due in some five weeks.

Addressing workers at the Paul Alabi Multipurpose Hall of the institution last week, Mrs. Agagu said the panel’s investigation would cover the past 10 years.  She reiterated that the visitation exercise is not meant to witch-hunt anyone but to review the performance of the institution of higher learning in different areas.

“The purpose of this visitation exercise is to review the performance of the college in the areas of governance, academic standards, quality assurance, management of finances, the relationship between management on the one hand, staff and students on the other, the condition of physical infrastructure as well as instructional facilities and thereafter advise Government accordingly”.
