Lawyer urges FUTO to obey directive on community land

    By Damian Duruiheoma, Owerri

Most communities of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) have called on the management of the institution to obey the directive given to it by the Federal Government to excise part of the land donated to it back to the owners.

The host communities made up of the six constituent communities on the Port Harcourt Road axis of the land – Ihiagwa, Dindi Ihiagwa, Umuanunu, Umuoma Nekede, Obinze and Avu – through their attorney, Chief Sam Anokam, vowed that they were prepared to challenge FUTO’s stance on the return of the land to any level.

Reacting to the comments credited to the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Francis Eze that the communities and their attorney were spreading falsehood among other accusations, Anokam said, the earlier FUTO acted as directed by the federal government, the better for the institution.

He said the university deviated from the clauses of the agreement in the memorandum of understanding engineered by the federal ministry of works and housing, thereby denying the chances of the host communities from getting what was approved by the Federal Government.

Anokam said: “I am a professional of great repute, a fellow of Nigerian Institute of Surveyors and Valuers and a Knight of St. Christopher in the Anglican Church, a grandfather and above all, a community leader. I cannot wake up one morning and begin to spread falsehood. Who will I be impressing by spreading falsehood?

“The Vice Chancellor is rather trying to suppress the fact that the federal government has considered a move to excise land out of the FUTO land for the host communities.

“The Federal Government set up a committee which FUTO and its host communities were represented and produced a memorandum of understanding for the parties to sign. But, FUTO refused to sign the MoU reached since 2019 as part of the effort by the Federal Government to resolve the perennial impasse that had brought acrimony over the years between the host communities and FUTO.”

Anokam said the issue had been tabled before the National Assembly, lamenting that his people had no farm lands and places of abode.

NAPTAN urges govt to end insecurity

The National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and service chiefs to end insecurity in the country, especially in schools where innocent students are being kidnapped, maimed or killed.

It also urged government at all levels to ensure the deployment of armed joint task force security personnel to protect schools and create a conducive learning environment for students.

NAPTAN made this known in a statement by its National President, Haruna Danjuma, in which the association restated its call on government and security agencies to ensure the release of all abducted students and teachers still in captivity across the country.

It lamented the poor responses of security officials whenever the association passes intelligence reports that bordered on security of students to them, adding that this led to the abduction of students and teachers in Kagara, Niger State.

The body canvassed training of students in all institutions of learning on security knowledge and consciousness.

Also speaking in a telephone interview, it said parents and teachers could no longer sleep with their the two eyes closed and lamented that attacks and abduction in schools was giving NAPTAN and citizens serious concern, considering its consequences on national life and development.

Urging the government to ensure perimeter fencing round all schools in the country, NAPTAN expressed shock over the news of abduction of students and teachers of Government Secondary School, Kagara, Niger State and others in various parts of the country.

Danjuma maintained that government at all levels should channel their security votes to securing lives of Nigerian students in secondary boarding or day schools, as well as tertiary institutions in the country.

The association also enjoined government at all levels to do the needful by employing both human and material resources to mitigate if not totally eradicate banditry and other criminal activities in the country.

NAPTAN solicited the support of all stakeholders to assist schools in their domains with intelligence gathering and survey to avert future occurrences, adding: “There can never be sound education where there is insecurity and trauma.

“Government at all levels should concentrate on schools and tertiary institutions. Some parents have withdrawn their children from schools due to insecurity. Parent Teacher Association (PTA) should also be allowed to play their roles

Benue to monitor 2,625 teachers following training

Monitoring of 2,625 teachers who underwent Jollyphonics literacy training will begin next week in Benue State.

The monitoring follows the training of the teachers, as well as 50 Quality Assurance officers and heads of academics for three weeks in 18 centres to use Jolly Phonics, a fun and interactive teaching tool that applies the synthetic phonics literacy teaching methodology.

Synthetic phonics is recommended by governments around the world because of the way it provides children with the skills needed to read and write.

The training, which began on January 18, this year, was funded by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) under the 2017/2018 grants for Teachers Professional Development for each of the 36 states.

Benue was the second state in the federation after Enugu to complete its 2017/2018 training. Ondo and Adamawa states completed their training earlier this week, just as Kano and Adamawa began theirs.

The monitoring of the trained teachers will be done by Local Government Quality Assurance officers, heads of academics and project coordinators under the supervision of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board and the  Universal Learning Solutions (ULS), UBEC’s implementing partners in the delivery of the Teacher Professional Development initiative.

ULS CEO Mr Gary Foxcroft said the Jolly Phonics literacy project, now in its fifth year in Benue State had helped many children to read and write.

“The Benue State Jolly Phonics is a fantastic opportunity for all children in Benue State to benefit from the opportunity to learn to read and write. The project will, therefore, help increase equity and equal opportunities for all children in Benue State.”

Mr Patrick Uzu, Nigeria Country Director, ULS, highlighted the exceptional support and partnership offered by Benue SUBEB as being instrumental in the success of the project.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Benue SUBEB to train, resource and mentor its teachers in Jolly Phonics. This project gives the children of Benue State a brighter future. Our sincere thanks and appreciation go to the Executive Chairman, Benue SUBEB, Comrade Joeseph Utse and his team who have handled the training very professionally

Foxcroft also praised the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for its continued support for the adoption of Jolly Phonics in government schools across Nigeria.

“UBEC have really recognised the tremendous impact that Jolly Phonics has been having on literacy levels in Nigeria’s government schools and have taken it on as one of their flagship programmes. This has helped us to initiate new projects across the country. Jolly Phonics is now being taught in all 36 states, and FCT. This is truly amazing and will help to improve the reading and writing abilities of millions of children in the years ahead,” he said.

TCN, Borno move to restore power supply to Maiduguri

    By John Ofikhenua, Abuja

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) with the support of the Borno Government has mobilised resources to ensure quick restoration of electricity supply to Maiduguri, the state capital and environs.

Electricity supply was interrupted following the damage of its high tension towers T159, T160 and T161 of 330kV Damaturu-Maiduguri Transmission Line in the North East.

TCN has completed new foundation of Tower T159 and have equally procured all the necessary tower members and materials for the replacement of the other two damaged towers on ground at TCN’s Baga Road Substation in Maiduguri.

Work is ongoing to make them ready for installation.

On Saturday, the Management team of TCN led by the Acting Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz; Borno officials led by Commissioner for Housing and Energy, Engr. Yuguda Sadeh Vungas and the Managing Director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company, Engr. Engr. Baba Umara Mustapha were at the TCN Maiduguri Work Centre for an on-the-spot inspection of the equipment/materials and ongoing fabrication work of the tower parts for the replacement of the damaged towers.

While fielding questions from journalists, TCN Managing Director/CEO, assured since all the necessary equipment, materials and workforce are on ground and fabrication work is ongoing, the reconstruction work proper would soon commence in earnest at the sites, as tower foundation has been completed.
This means that electricity supply would be restored as quickly as possible on completion of the tower erection work.

General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah made this known in a statement on Sunday.

Her statement noted that Abdulaziz further explained while the damaged towers reconstruction is on-going, TCN is also temporarily, constructing a by-pass line for temporary diversion of the line which would more readily ensure supply to the affected areas before the main tower structures are completed.

According to Abdulaziz: “First of all, I want to apologise on behalf TCN over what happened in Maiduguri and the North East as a whole, we understand the urgent need for power supply especially in this axis at this time, I want to assure you that the TCN is committed to doing all that is possible to make sure that the power supply is restored as quickly as possible.

“All the materials you see here will be installed very quickly, you can see all the materials, the conductors, composite insulators, channel irons and you can see our workforce at work already, fabricating the parts.

“Everybody is working, and they have been working everyday, Saturday and Sunday inclusive. This is because we are bent on ensuring that light is restored as soon as possible in Maiduguri and environs.

Speaking on the transmission line in Damboa axis, Abdulaziz said the reconstruction of the Damboa – Maidugiri transmission line has been procured and work would soon start on the project.

“When completed, the line will serve as a second source of power supply to Maiduguri and environs.”

Man City deny making £430m offer for Messi

    Agency Reporter

Premier League side Manchester City have fired the latest salvo in the developing transfer saga involving Lionel Messi as they denied reports of a renewed offer for the Argentine superstar ahead of next season.

Messi’s future in Spain has once again been thrown into doubt after the Catalan side’s latest Champions League humbling, this time at the hands of oil-rich Paris Saint-Germain who savaged the five-time champions 4-1 at the Camp Nou earlier this week, once again stoking rumors that Messi could be moving towards the Barcelona exit.

The Barca skipper attempted to force a move away from the club last August, citing language in his contract which he claimed enabled him to leave the club on a free transfer but eventually recanted his desire in order to avoid an ugly legal battle.

However, Messi’s about-face last summer is looking more and more a like a stay of execution rather than a tacit ceasefire.

Per a report by The Sun, Manchester City offered Messi’s a bumper deal several months ago worth an eye-watering £600 million (US$841 million) across five years, but have since reduced their offer significantly towards the £430 million mark – citing the current financial climate as well as Messi being one year further into his career as the reason for the offer being downgraded.

  • MERSEYSIDE WAR : Liverpool, Everton derby takes centre stage again

MERSEYSIDE WAR : Liverpool, Everton derby takes centre stage again

Rivals Liverpool and Everton lock horns for the 289th  Merseyside derby this afternoon, with just one place and three points separating the two sides in the Premier League table, reports OLUWAMAYOMIKUN OREKOYA.

Champions Liverpool  have plummeted to sixth place following a dramatic dip in form over the past two months, giving their neighbours from across Stanley Park , Everton, the chance to move level on points with them this weekend if they can end their long Anfield hoodoo. The scale of Liverpool’s demise over recent weeks is beginning to be laid bare in the Premier League table, where the champions currently sit in sixth place and now a whopping 16 points adrift of runaway leaders Manchester City.

It was less than two months ago that Jurgen Klopp’s side sat top of the pile themselves, so to now be in a position where the manager has publicly conceded the title is in indication of just how bad their domestic form has been of late.

The Reds have won just two of their eight top-flight outings so far this calendar year and have lost five of those – incredibly already suffering as many league defeats in 2021 as they did from 72 matches in both 2019 and 2020 combined.

That includes defeats in each of their last three matches – against Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City and Leicester City – and another loss on Saturday would see them lose four on the bounce for the first time since December 2002.

The most recent two defeats have seen them ship seven goals too – as many as they had let in in their previous 10 games – and their overall tally of goals conceded is now 32 from 24 outings, just one fewer than they let in throughout their entire title-winning campaign.

Klopp will no doubt be scratching his head as to why there has been such a marked downturn in results, but perhaps the most baffling aspect of their recent poor form has been their home record.

After going 68 league games without defeat at Anfield, the second-longest unbeaten run of its kind in English top-flight history, Liverpool have now lost their last three and are winless in their last five.

Indeed, it is now more than two months since the Reds won a game on home turf, and you have to go back to 1923 for the only previous time Liverpool have ever lost four consecutive home league games in any division.

Everton themselves were the last reigning top-flight champion to suffer that fate way back in 1928-29, which gives a stark illustration of just how poor Liverpool’s form has been at home especially.

Despite that, it will not be all doom and gloom for Klopp and his players ahead of the visit of Everton, and they offered a reminder of what they can do during Tuesday night’s impressive Champions League win over RB Leipzig. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane saw off a Leipzig side that was in good form and flying high in the Bundesliga, notching two away goals without reply in Budapest to put one foot in the quarter-finals of the competition.

By Klopp’s own admission, the Champions League provides Liverpool’s last realistic route to silverware this season and so giving themselves a good lead to protect in the reverse fixture will have lifted a weight off the manager’s shoulders.

There is still plenty of work to be done to ensure Liverpool’s place in the competition again next season, with the Reds now two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea, but Klopp will also take encouragement from their recent league performances despite the unsatisfactory results.

The champions controlled the vast majority of the game against Leicester before their costly collapse, and were also every bit a match for Manchester City prior to another collapse.

On both occasions it was individual errors which were most to blame for Liverpool letting points slip, and Klopp will be confident that his side will return to winning ways sooner rather than later if they can cut those uncharacteristic mistakes out.

There is every reason for him to believe that the return to winning ways domestically will come this weekend too, with Everton enduring their worst ever run against their local rivals.

It is now over a decade since the Toffees claimed Merseyside derby bragging rights and they still have not won at Anfield this century, last doing so in 1999.

In more recent history, Everton also come into this match in poor Premier League form and are one of only three teams to have picked up fewer points than Liverpool over the past six games.

That statistic perhaps does not paint the full picture, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side sharing the spoils with Leicester, earning a dramatic 3-3 draw at Manchester United and winning at Leeds United in that time, but in terms of points on the board it is now just five from the last 18 on offer.

The Toffees make the short trip to Anfield off the back of successive defeats to teams at opposite ends of the table, first losing to Fulham last weekend and then succumbing to the Manchester City juggernaut on Wednesday evening.

The encouraging news ahead of this game is that those defeats both came at home, where Everton have now picked up only one point from five games since the turn of the year.

It is a completely different story away from home, where Everton have amassed 17 points from a possible 21 in a seven-game run that stretches back to the beginning of November.

March 2016 was the last time they enjoyed a longer unbeaten streak away from home in the top flight, while only the league’s top three have picked up more points on their travels throughout 2020-21 so far.

That said, even accounting for Liverpool’s recent troubles at home, Manchester City are still the only team that can better their home points haul this season, and their record against Everton at Anfield cannot be ignored.

Liverpool will know that another defeat today  would be a huge blow to their top-four hopes, whereas Everton have the tantalizing prospect of moving level with their hosts having played a game fewer, as well as keeping their own Champions League ambitions alive.

In the ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE, Burnley failed to pick the maximum points at home to Ola Aina inspired Fulham on Wednesday in a rearranged fixture played at the Turf Moor.

They have another home tie against relegation-haunted West Brom which pays the wages of Super Eagles defender, Semi Ajayi, today.

The Baggies are 12 points adrift of safety as they are placed 19th  with 13 points. It will no doubt be a tough duel for Ajayi, and his teammates considering their precarious position.

Fulham’s Ola Aina bagged his second goal of the season against Burnley on Wednesday and he has told his teammates to have a positive mind-set despite their position on the table as they welcome Sheffield United to the Craven Cottage today. They will no doubt have their sights firmly on the three points at stake and then prays that Newcastle United slips up at Manchester United tomorrow.

Nigeria duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi played different roles to help Leicester City to a morale-boosting 3-1 home win over Liverpool to remain third on the table with 46 points from 24 matches. Ndidi was named in the EPL Team of the Week for his virtuoso display at the King Power Stadium last weekend while Iheanacho was an unused substitute in the same encounter.

After negotiating tough Europa League Round of 32 tie against Peter Olayinka’s Slavia Prague on Thursday, The Foxes will visit Aston Villa at the Villa Park tomorrow with the hope of consolidating on their recent impressive form.

In the GERMAN BUNDESLIGA, Emmanuel Dennis and Cologne will be eyeing another win when they host Stuttgart today. They have been on an upward curve since the arrival of the Nigerian in the last transfer window. Dennis is supported by Toluwase Arokodare and Nigeria eligible, Kingsley Ehizibue who form the trio at the Billy Goats.

Freiburg will host Taiwo Awoniyi’s Union Berlin today in another league tie. Awoniyi with five goals in the Bundesliga was recently rated as being among the Best 12 strikers in Germany and the tie with Freiburg should spur him on to add to his goals tally having gone on goals drought in the past seven games. His last goal was on January 2nd this year in their 2-0 away win at Werder Bremen. They have won only one of those seven games thereafter.

Kevin Akpoguma is nearing his comeback from a hamstring injury but Hoffenheim will have to still do without him when they host Werder Bremen tomorrow.
