Tottenham can finish in top four, says Mourinho

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho still believes his side can finish in the top four of the Premier League and says the current table does not mean anything.

A poor run of just three wins in the last 12 games has seen Spurs slip from the top of the table down to ninth and they are now outsiders to secure Champions League qualification.

Sunday’s visit to West Ham seems pivotal as they are six points behind the Hammers, with a game in hand and a victory will reignite their top-four hopes.

In a see-saw season, where teams have all played different amounts of games, Mourinho says anything is still possible.

“In the same way you lose three matches and you go to a bad position, you win three matches and go to a much better position,” the Portuguese said. “So like happened last season, let’s go until the end and see what the table gives us. In the end, the table always gives you what you deserve.

  • MILAN DERBY: Ibrahimovic, Lukaku in Serie A title race battle on Sunday

MILAN DERBY: Ibrahimovic, Lukaku in Serie A title race battle on Sunday

The pair had an ugly spat during Inter’s Coppa Italia win over AC Milan last month and will meet again on Sunday in a pivotal Serie A showdown

In Italy, they are calling it ‘the derby of derbies’, and with good cause.

On Sunday, AC Milan and Inter will meet at San Siro as the top two sides in Serie A – something which has not happened for 10 years.

Back in April 2011, the Rossoneri had a narrow two-point lead over their city rivals and, despite being shorn of the services of the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, they romped to a 3-0 win on their way to their 18th scudetto – and still their most recent.

But Milan are back. And so, too, is Ibrahimovic, who, at 39 years old, is inspiring the most unexpected of title challenges for a club that was in a state of chaos before his return to San Siro in January of last year.

But while the Swede is defying the ageing process, Stefano Pioli’s young squad is beginning to show signs of wear and tear.

The pressure of leading for most of the season appears to be getting to Milan, who gave up first place last weekend because of a worryingly tame 2-0 loss at newly-promoted Spezia. The Rossoneri had reached the New Year undefeated in Serie A; now they have lost three of their past seven games.

The shock setback at Spezia, in which Milan failed to register a single shot on target, allowed Inter to move one point clear with an impressive 3-1 win over Lazio.

Simone Inzaghi’s side had won six successive games in Serie A, but they were battered into submission by Romelu Lukaku, who scored two goals and created another.

At times, it felt like Lukaku against the entire Lazio backline – and yet it was not a fair fight.

In teeing up Lautaro Martinez for Inter’s killer third goal, the Belgium international bounded past Marco Parolo in such stunning fashion that it made a mockery of the argument that Lukaku was not fast enough to play the counter-attacking game Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted at Manchester United.

As the Gazzetta dello Sport  wrote, it was one of those games where Lukaku “looks like an adult playing football with kids in the park”. It was a mismatch. But now it is time for a rematch: a battle between two true footballing heavyweights, in every sense of the word.

The Derby della Madonnina is usually bigger than any individual showdown, but Lukaku and Ibrahimovic’s bitter row in Inter and Milan’s most recent meeting has cast a huge shadow over this weekend’s game.

Indeed, it even inspired the creation of a new mural, which adorns a building on Via de Piccolomini, on the south-east corner of San Siro. It shows Lukaku and Ibrahimovic squaring up, and is accompanied by the words, “Face to face, heart to heart.”

It is a rather beautiful take on a quite ugly incident.

  • Making a superhero: How Pelé became more myth than man

Casa Pelé, the small two-room house in Três Corações where Pelé was born in 1940, is now a popular tourist attraction. As no photographs or descriptions of the original house have survived, it was rebuilt entirely from the memories of Pelé’s mother, Dona Celeste, and his uncle Jorge, with period furniture and fixings sourced from antique shops. And so what greets visitors today is really only a vague approximation of the house where one of the world’s most famous footballers spent his earliest years: a heavily curated blend of hazy memories and selective detail. As you walk in, a wireless radio plays classic songs from the early 1940s on an endless loop.

As it turns out, this is also pretty much how Pelé himself is remembered these days. It’s 50 years since he played his last game for Brazil. Only a fraction of his rich and prolific playing career has survived on video. The vast majority of us never saw him play live. And so for the most part, the genius of Pelé exists largely in the abstract: something you heard or read about rather than something you saw, a bequeathed fact rather than a lived experience, a processed product rather than an organic document.

And so naturally the most stirring and vivid passages in Pelé, the new biopic of the legendary Brazilian footballer, are of football itself: the pure speed, the elegant nutmegs, the emphatic finishes, the footwork as precise as music. The legacy of Pelé has become a fractured and contested thing over the decades, but the football itself: this, at least, is pure. And in these passages, when gliding past defenders as if operating on some higher plane of intelligence, or being hacked and crunched to pieces by cynical opposition tactics, or defining the world’s biggest games with pieces of euphoric skill, Pelé lives as he deserves to live: with the ball at his feet. And at Pelé’s feet, the ball was whatever you wanted it to be.

  • Zidane gives verdict on Mbappe, Haaland

Zidane gives verdict on Mbappe, Haaland

Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have both been heavily linked with moves to Real Madrid, and the pair put on a dazzling show in the Champions League this week.

Mbappe sunk Barcelona with a sensational hat-trick for Paris Saint-Germain, while Haaland inspired Borussia Dortmund with two goals in their comeback win over Sevilla.

Their thrilling performances have led plenty to speculate that Mbappe v Haaland could be the game’s next defining individual rivalry – and now Zinedine Zidane has had his say.

“I watch all the games and I like to see great things like any fan,” Zidane told reporters. “They are both very good and very young, players of the present and for the future. Whether one or the other, I won’t say, everyone has their own preferences.”

Reports have suggested Madrid want to put Mbappe and Haaland in the same team at the Santiago Bernabeu – but it remains to be seen whether the club could afford either right now.

Zidane also revealed that striker Karim Benzema won’t be available for his side’s trip to Real Valladolid in La Liga on Saturday.

“Something came up yesterday, he won’t be with us tomorrow,” Zidane said. “We’ll see for next week.”

Madrid travel to Atalanta on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash, before league fixtures with Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid.

    Tuchel: Tomori has ‘high potential’

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel believes on-loan defender Fikayo Tomori has “high potential”, but admitted he “has not spent much time thinking about him” since moving to the club.

Tomori, 23, joined Milan on loan for the rest of the season in the January transfer window. The Italian club have the option to make the deal permanent for £25 million plus add-on payments.

Tuchel, who was speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League match against Southampton on Saturday, spoke positively about Tomori gaining experience in a “different culture” but said he had had little time to consider whether the defender will ever be a part of his plans.

“To be very honest, I have not spent too many minutes thinking about Tomori,” Tuchel said on Friday. “Not because I don’t like him or I don’t see his potential but because there was simply not time.

“It’s always the target for me to have players who can make it in different circumstances, who can show their qualities in different cultures and different clubs.

“We will have this talk in the next weeks and months about all the guys who are on loan. Of course, I have a general impression of Tomori which means that he has high potential but I’m not into all the details right now.”

    Guardiola: I didn’t inspire Arteta

Pep Guardiola says he did not inspire Mikel Arteta and lauded his former Manchester City No 2 for the job he is doing as Arsenal manager, feeling that the Gunners will be future Premier League title contenders.

Arsenal have not won the league since 2004 while City have won three of the last seven, and look likely to land the 2021 title after opening up a 10-point gap at the top of the Premier League after their 3-1 win at Everton on Wednesday.

That was their 17th straight win in all competitions while the Gunners, who won last season’s FA Cup under Arteta, have picked up only one victory in their last five following their 1-1 Europa League draw with Benfica.

Speaking ahead of City’s trip to the Emirates on Sunday – live on Sky Sports Premier League – Guardiola heaped praise on his former assistant and felt that Arsenal could once again start challenging for titles in the “early future” under Arteta.

“I did not inspire him [Mikel Arteta]. What he knows he knows for himself,” Guardiola said on Friday. “I am not any influence. What he is doing, all credit to him and his backroom staff. Tomorrow we will have an incredible performance. They have an exceptional build-up, they have quality and they have energy.”

  • Traders, Police trade blames over Nnewi market inferno

Traders, Police trade blames over Nnewi market inferno

    By Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

Controversies have continued to trail Wednesday’s fire that gutted the multi-million timber market in Nnewi, Anambra state.

While traders in the market pointed accusing fingers on the Police for the incident, Police absolved themselves, attributing the inferno to some hoodlums attempting to evade arrest.

Chairman, Nnewi Timber Dealers Association, Chief Nonso Nnetu who could not specifically identify the cause of the fire, however alleged that the inferno started when security operatives entered the erosion site in search of suspected cultists, hard drugs sellers and consumers.

He said, “A combined team of security operatives made up of the police and vigilance groups arrived the market with about eight patrol vehicles and moved straight to an erosion site at the south end of the market in search of cultists, hard drugs sellers and consumers.

“Soon after they entered the valley around 12pm, we saw smoke with flames rising from the area. Though the operatives, while pursuing the suspects tried to put out the fire with the assistance of the traders, but they couldn’t.”

Nnetu regretted that no fewer than 108 shops, processing machines and other goods worth millions of naira were lost to the inferno.

A victim, Chief Dozie Egwuonwu lamented that he had just stocked his goods worth N3 million which were all consumed by the fire.

On his part, Leader of the vigilance groups during the joint operation, Dr Maduka Atuenyi who doubles as the Chairman of Nnewi and Anambra South vigilance groups, absolved the police and other operatives from the incident, insisting that the suspects put on the fire to escape arrest.

Reacting, the Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, dismissed the report that police caused the fire as false and misleading, targeted at creating tension and anarchy in the State.

He said the inferno was occasioned by a clash between a cult group and drugs sellers at 100 foot road Nnewi, resulting to serious pandemonium in the area.

Mohammed added that a total of 35 suspects have been arrested, while an axe, dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa and a motorcycle were recovered from them.

He said, “The attention of the Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a trending video clip which has gone viral in the social media showing a fire incident at Nnewi Timber market in which the recorder claimed the Nigeria Police Force as responsible.

“The report is not only false but absolutely misleading with the tendency of creating tension and anarchy in the State.

“For the avoidance of doubt, on 17/2/2021 at about 10am a cult group and drugs sellers had a clash at 100 foot road Nnewi, causing serious pandemonium in the area.

“Following the report, police patrol teams in conjunction with local vigilante group quickly mobilised to the scene and arrested four suspects on the spot.

“The remaining hoodlums blocked the road and set the fire on the saw dust in a bid to prevent the police from taking the suspects to the station. The fire overwhelmed the people who tried to put it off which extended to the timber market.

“As a result, a police patrol vehicle attached to Otolo Division and three vehicles belonging to the Vigilante groups were stoned by the rampaging youth.

“Meanwhile, normalcy was restored in the area and a total of 35 suspects were arrested. Exhibits recovered includes Axe, dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa and a motorcycle.

“It is obvious that the recorder share the video online with the aim of triggering anarchy in the State which the Command and other law enforcement agencies are working assiduously to prevent.”

While urging the public to disregard the misleading video report, the Police warned mischief makers to be ready to face the full wrath of the law, insisting that force would not fold its arm while criminality was being perpetrated.
