  • Why I’m giving upcoming acts a platform

Budding music act, Alatise Mujeeb Olashile, better known as Shillz Tex has concluded plans to hold his maiden concert tagged ‘The #KnowShillzTex Experience’.

According to the artiste, the aim of the show is not just to showcase his singing ability, but also to harness the talents of other up and coming acts. Slated for Saturday, June 30 at Beni Hotels and Suites, Marina, Lagos, Tex explained that the initial plan was to fete his fan base to a listening party.

“But as time went by, I came to realise that I was getting more interests than I anticipated. Up and coming artistes were also reaching out to me indicating interest to perform on the show. So I felt if they wanted to perform, I will give them the platform so they also can come with their fans. That way we can exchange fans. So it was elevated from a listening party to a show. It is a small one. There will be various artistes,” he explained.

Other artistes who will be performing at the show are Al Ghalib, King Bobby, Jimi Jang, Nuzi D, Luwy C and a host of others.

“It is just for people to listen to my songs and know what I’m about. Presently, I have eight songs but on that day, I will be performing six of them. Since I’m like the headliner of the show, I’m not trying to bring someone else to steal the show from me. That is why I’m headlining it. I’m not doing this show for the profit. I’m doing it to sell my art,” he further stated.

Songs to be performed by Shillz Tex include ‘Balling’ ft Dremo, ‘New Wave’, ‘Aje Street’, ‘Ma Niggs’ and a couple of others.

  • HALIMA ABUBAKAR: Happiness is not in material things

After her battle with fibroids, Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar, on Wednesday, noted that the things of life will no longer have much value at a later day.

“As you get older, you’ll realize that a $300 watch and $30 watch both tell the same time,” she wrote, as words of wisdom for the day.

“A Michael Kors wallet and Forever 21 wallet hold the same amount of money. A $100,000 house and a $ 300,000 home host the same loneliness. A Bentley will also drive you as far as a Ford. True happiness is not found in materialistic things, it comes from the love and laughter found with each other.”

The actress, who was reported to be battling cancer, after being spotted with a shaved hair, debunked the rumour, revealing that it was fibroid that she was fighting in 2017. She is back on her feet and presently taking up jobs, having regained her strength.

  • KWAME: DECRIES SMALL DOCTOR’S INVITATION TO ASO VILLA

Entertainment guru and owner of Nigezie, Femi Aderibigbe, aka Kwame, has slammed handlers of President Muhammadu Buhari for including hip hop sensation Small Doctor as part of the entourage that attended an Iftar (breaking of fast) at Aso Rock Villa, during the Ramadan.

Kwame said on Facebook on Thursday that the ‘catch phrase’ in Small Doctor’s song, ‘Penalty’  is negatively influencing Nigerian youths.

“Small Doctor, when he chanted “If you no get money, hide your face”, was simply echoing the “get rich or die trying” creed of some inner city youths trying to survive against all odds,” said Kwame.

“I’m sure he meant no harm, but the subliminal nature of music has made it a dangerous tool that penetrates your subconscious mind without hindrance and recruits you without permission.

“Davido echoing the chant in another hit song, helped push the message out of the streets and into elites’ vile. Now,  the message has resonated so well that even a big brand like Airtel has made it a campaign slogan for their data product without considering the negative effects on the psyche of its audience in a depressed economy,” he added.

According to Kwame, Small Doctor was invited to Aso Villa, and also got photo opportunities with President Muhammadu Buhari, when there are thousands of young people who are better aligned with brand Buhari.

“I love Small Doctor,” he said, adding: “I love the fact that another young man has been able to pull himself out of poverty and added value to himself and his family, but that’s not enough for me to keep quiet on this because our young people need to hear these words I’m about to write.

“Henceforth, please tell your kids every day, tell your students in school, tell all our young people that if you don’t have integrity, hide your face! If you don’t have respect for others, hide your face! If you don’t value hard work and appreciate the dignity in honest labour, hide your face! If you don’t believe in processes and procedures and just jump around, hide your face! If you are not a true patriot, loyal, dependable and honest, hide your face! If you don’t love God and honor your parents, whether they deserve it or not, hide your face!

If you can’t be trusted with anything, hide your face! If you rig elections and cheat in examinations, hide your face! If you make substandard products that kill and maim people, hide your face! If you loot our commonwealth and deny millions the welfare they deserve, hide your face! But if you no get money yet, celebrate your days of humble beginnings and understand that it can only get better! You are not less of a human being, there’s nothing to hide, you are much better in the eyes of God than all those flashing filthy money everywhere. Your best is yet to come, you are definitely on the right path, things may be a bit tough right now, but you will get there eventually! Don’t lose hope, don’t join the bandwagon. Stay strong and never give up,” he admonished.

  • Daffangy Entertainment unveils new artistes

Daffangy Entertainment has added two new acts, Ejiro Erhirhovwefe aka Ejiz and Jimoh Wasiu Oyewumi aka Jimoh Waxiu to its imprint. This is coming after a nationwide audition for the best of Nigerian singers.

According to its management, the record company is focused on discovering and developing new talents, nurturing them and projecting them across the African continent and the world at large.

Speaking at the media unveil which held in Lagos recently, the General Manager of the outfit, Kabiru Ibrahim, reiterated the desire of the label to become a reference point in the continent, and also leave a legacy that will  outlive the founders and current artists.

Speaking at the unveil, Ejiz, who was born and raised in Effurun, Delta State, said that he was drawn to the label, not just because of its proper management system but because of how they bond as a family. He started  his music career in 2012 when he recorded his first song produced by current label mate Jimoh Waxiu. He has also featured acts like MI2, Yung Hanz and Shuun Bebe in other songs.

“We work as one,” he said, adding:  “As regards my music, I’m here to take Afrobeat forward. Where we are right now, there is much more we can give to it, so we are taking it forward.”

Also speaking, Waxiu, a song writer and producer, says that he intends to face the Nigerian music industry with all he’s got.

“I think I can go everywhere I want to go, and sing what I want to sing with this company.

“Secondly, I’m bringing good songs, because the songs I hear are not appealing enough. So I’m bringing good songs and great melody to the table.”

  • Celebs embark on PVC campaign

Ahead of the 2019 elections, some big shots in the entertainment industry have taken it as a responsibility to reach out to people to get their Permanent Voters’ Card.

With the process and collection of PVC ended on Thursday, many of them queued to collect their cards at various locations. Some were seen in T-shirts with the inscription: ‘Register, Select, Vote Not Fight, Protect.’

And with the recent killings in Plateau State, veteran actor Richard Mofe Damijo, known as RMD, said that the killings are as a result of government’s nonchalance.

“It’s been a few days of numbness and soul searching for me.  Just last Friday, I was as ecstatic as other millions of Nigerians at the Super Eagles’ victory over Iceland, it was an amazing weekend as I had a constant smile reliving the match, but unexpectedly, evil crept up on us, went to Plateau and massacred about one hundred humans.  After the initial shock, the realisation that the battle for the soul of this nation just intensified hit me hard and I have since questioned myself.

“The Plateau killings had no business happening at all; it is an occurrence that was absolutely perpetrated because of the nonchalant and inactive body language of the government. It is time leadership stop hiding behind long speeches, empty promises and be accountable to the people. We demand justice and refuse to back down because “eye wey dey cry, dey see” as we cry and mourn let our sorrow fuel our passion to go get our PVCs.”

For comic actress Chigul, the process of getting her PVC was done as a step to be part of a process to build a better future. “I’m officially a registered voter…. As we lay to rest tonight, I want us to think again if we had thought against picking up our PVCs. Today, I finally did the do.., I stood the time in the sun to do the do. I did it as a step to be part of a process to build a better future for my children and generations unborn. I did this today for all the ills and mess in our society at the moment, I did it today for the killings and bloodshed in this land.”

ONE ambassador Waje, says: “Resigning your fate is to willingly open yourself to rape. If you are angry at it, do something about it.”

Songstress Omawumi was not left behind in the campaign.  “We must use our voices to speak against issues like this.  “PVC ready! It took me less than 30mins to get mine.”

Actress Lala Akindoju also said that having a PVC is having the power to make a choice as the country is in a state of emergency.

“This is really where our power lies,” she said.

“I’m appealing to everyone to do this. Treat this as an emergency because our country is really in a state of emergency. As citizens, we have more power than them. During the last elections the turnout was higher than usual. In 2019, we can do better.”

Musician Samklef on his part said prayer is not the key now. “We don’t need prayers for this country to be great. Which kind God won’t answer his people’s prayers for almost 60years? The answer is in our hands go get your PVC.”

  • What’s up with Nigeria’s Alpha cinema firm?

At the risk of reporting doom, I quietly waited for this moment to confirm rumours of leading Nigeria’s cinema company, Filmhouse/FilmOne going under.

For a company of that status – which someone likened to Hollywood studio system  in the sense of a vertically integrated company – hearsays of allegations and counter allegations of sexual assault, financial misappropriation, personal ego and unfriendly mien to its immediate constituency were no good songs to the ears, hence my reluctance to run to town with a sensational report.

When again, on Wednesday, I heard the executive honcho, Kene Mkparu, pre-empted his sack and quickly resigned, it only took a day after for the management of the company to release a statement, albeit of his supposedly smooth exit.

Irrespective of how well-pieced the statement was, it merely confirmed the purported internal rancour which could have remained doubtful if the damage control mechanics had crafted an earlier statement to suggest that the big man was moving to higher grounds. After all, he left Genesis Cinemas in like manner six years ago to co-establish Filmhouse with Kene Okwuosa as Deputy Managing Director and Moses Babatope as Executive Director/COO; the two guys holding forth as Managing Directors for the Group: Filmhouse Cinemas and FilmOne Distribution and Production respectively.

No matter what anyone is made to believe regarding the financial stability and otherwise of Filmhouse/FilmOne, it is not a good sign for the company and the Nigerian motion picture industry in terms of an enduring corporate legacy.

My instinct tells me that Okwuosa and Babatope may have only been retained in order not to send more wrong signals. Because, for a truth, I learnt the company was going to be sold off in the middle of the squabble that had Mkparu suspended before he was later recalled just so buyers won’t get wind of the problems and under-price.

If eventually things pick up fine as I pray, it is hoped that the company’s supposed unfriendly mien to film producers, needless shrewdness to players in a developing industry, unfair treatment given to films outside FilmOne production alliances, and seeming monopolistic attributes in the face of a ‘docile’ competitor like Silverbird Cinema/Distribution would be nipped in the bud.

That said, Filmhouse/FilmOne, going by recent development in its management may be breaking the heart of Nigerians as an investment that had a promising start and a strategic development plan to roll-out 25 cinemas over a six-year period. It is six years already and crisis is not the same as 25 cinemas, a target it is yet to meet. Yes, with only nine outlets – four in Lagos, two in Ibadan, one in Calabar, one in Akure, and one in Kano – it is yet to meet half its target.

Filmhouse opened its doors in December 2012, establishing itself as a key player in the cinema exhibition space by opening cinemas in key cities across Nigeria. To further diversify its operations and tap into another attractive segment of the film industry, the management team launched FilmOne, a distribution and production company, in 2014. On November 1 2014, African Capital Alliance (ACA) announced its investments in Filmhouse and FilmOne. Now you know who the real owners of the company are.

ACA had invested out of its third fund (CAPE III), a $400 million private equity fund in Filmhouse/FilmOne, enhancing its fast rise in the cinema exhibition and distribution chain.

The company is noted for some of the highest grossing Nigerian films till date.

And as it is that opportunities in the Nigerian motion picture industry is yet largely untapped, the company can only be advised to put its house in order in the new phase so announced by Okwuosa. Let’s also say that Mkparu’s exit will turn in Nollywood’s favour by opening up new structures that may fight the seeming existing monopoly. It is also hoped that lessons have been learnt from all parties.

  • KSA, Obey, others for PMAN Governor’s double celebration

Come next week Saturday, all roads will lead to Sango Ota, Ogun State, as the governor of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Dr. Kareem Olomide Osoba, is set for the launch of his new album and the centenary birthday of his mother

According to Osoba, the celebration which will hold on Saturday, June 30, at Fatlan Hotel and Suite, Ijako, Sango Ota will attract the creme de la creme in the entertainment industry.

In the album titled ‘Great Mother’, Osoba revealed the battle fought by his mother to make him great in life.

“She is a great mother indeed,” he said, adding: “My mother, Adijat Kuburat Oritoke Osoba, is a fantastic woman, the bond between the two of us is very difficult to understand, only God can reward her for what she has done in my life. If given the opportunity again in life, I will still prefer her as my mother.”

  • Michael Kalu confirms Sex-for-roles in Nollywood

Nollywood producer, Michael Kalu, has revealed that many producers and directors in the Nigerian movie industry demand to sleep with female thespians in exchange for a role in their movies. Kalu said this during an interview at a recent red carpet event.

“I can’t tell you that the sex for role syndrome doesn’t exist in Nollywood,” said Kalu who has worked as either a production manager or production assistant on more than 40 films.

“That will be a lie, some girls don’t want to work hard, attend auditions, castings and wait for their time to blow. They just want an instant rise to stardom and so believe they can get there with what they have as they use to say, and also some producers use their office to intimidate some of these girls too.

“So I will advise the lady thespians to work hard and stop having that mentality. And producers also should try to give roles to actors on merit.”

He however said cases have reduced in the last five years because some well-meaning Nigerians have created platforms like Obylisious Empire Film Academy and Tresurewells Academy that will not only train and equip the actors but also guarantee their breakthrough in Nollywood by creating jobs for them after their internship and shooting their movies with these trained actors

“So I will advise our intending or upcoming actors to look for these film academies and enroll. This way, the sex for role syndrome will keep reducing since these academies also guarantee roles.”

As the third largest film industry in the world, Nollywood has been notorious for its sex scandals and not too long ago, Paul Obazele had asserted that gay persons have taken over the movie sector. Also, a Nollywood producer disclosed that a big producer/marketer once harassed her by caressing her breasts and in 2015.  Kannywood actress, Rahama Sadau, went on Instagram to accuse a producer of denying her a role because she refused his sexual advances. Sadau however apologised the next day, describing her post as ‘childish.’

  • How 11-year-old restored my confidence –Ebube Nwagbo

Nollywood actress, Ebube Nwagbo, who is presently on the set of Taken, a new movie by Eneaji Chris, has said an 11-year-old kid actor she met on set restored her confidence.

“So I met one of the smartest and confident 11 year old ever, Alex who plays our daughter Cherry. She was always quick to remind me how big of a superstar she was because according to her, her first movie has received  over 30million views on YouTube.”

She continued, “I’m like wowwww! That means I’m very lucky to be playing alongside you this time and she’s like, ‘Yea, I shouldn’t fail to give her my number because she needs it for business purposes. She said she’s into a lot of businesses apart from acting. And I couldn’t stop marveling at her smartness and confidence. I was awed as  it reminded me of myself when I started acting. I didn’t have such confidence in myself.

Replying the young actor, “So dear Alex (Cherry), I hope this movie #Taken# be another million reeking views in your acting career. And thanks for making me more confident in myself, it was a great pleasure working with you”.
