  • Is Don Jazzy still drooling over Linda Ikeji?

Days after the engagement of super blogger, Linda Ikeji broke the internet, the furor seems to be dying down, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for Mavin Record’s boss, Michael Collins, aka Don Jazzy.

In the past, Jazzy had somewhat expressed his crush for Ikeji,  and shortly after her engagement hit the news mill, he uploaded a photo of himself weeping while his friends console him in a photograph that went viral on the social media. That was on Wednesday.

“Kai Linda is engaged. It is finished,” he wrote along with the crying emojis.

On Thursday, he followed it up with another photograph of himself wearing a knicker, captioned; ‘Throw back to when I thought my sexy legs would make her say “I Do”.’

Although he didn’t make it clear who he was referring to, his fans have been chiding him in the comment section of the post.

Jazzy, 35, had often joked about marrying Ikeji who is older than him by two years. The latter, on Wednesday, reportedly revived her love relationship with an unnamed old lover.

Sandra, Linda’s sister was said to have confirmed the news on her Instagram handle.

Sandra wrote on @sandra_Ikeji: “Congratulations @officiallindaikeji So happy sweet sis! This tells me that sometimes the wait is worth it. Can’t wait to plan your special day @eventsbysi are you readyyyy #itsagetaway.

Recall that Jazzy joked about proposing to Ikeji last year after Banky W and Adesua Etomi announced their engagement. He later said that he was not the man in Linda’s life.

Ikeji’s ex-boyfriend was said to have just relocated to Nigeria where the lovebirds decided to rekindle their love affair and got engaged.

Other celebrities have been consoling Jazzy in the same amusing manner, just as Peter Okoye who had earlier promised to fund his envisaged marriage to the blogger wrote: “And you just missed my sponsorship”.

    •     Joins campaign against drug abuse at UNILAG

Afro pop singer and Marvin Record act, Korede Bello has urged Nigerians to see police as ‘human beings’ and be ‘part of the solution’ to problems confronting the country.

Korede who was made the first Nigeria Police youth ambassador in 2015 said this in an Instagram video.

“The reason I’m wearing this uniform is to show you guys that the people in this uniform are human beings like you and me,” he said

“The policemen you come in contact with is somebody’s brother, somebody’s sister, somebody’s dad’ somebody’s relative, somebody’s uncle. And they’re human beings like you and me. So, the uniform is not the problem. People are the problem. And we need to address people issues. It’s a society problem. It’s issues of morality, welfare, a whole lot.

“But what I’m trying to say is when next you see a police officer, don’t just see somebody wearing a uniform, see a human being.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Korede Bello joined other artistes to team up with the Nigeria Police to advise youths to desist from crime.

Speaking to an audience of students at the Professor Ade Ajayi Auditorium, the University of Lagos, the singer who was dressed in Police uniform told students to absolve the police from blame and love themselves.  He also implored youths to get involve in governance.

“We shouldn’t blame the police for our problems,” Korede said.

“But we ourselves, we need to love ourselves, neighbour and country because loving yourself first would make you know what is good for the next person.”

Other celebrities that graced the occasion include Ruggedman, Dr. Sid, Sound Sultan, Small Doctor, Odunlade Adekola and Omoni Oboli.

The event, an initiative of the Nigeria Police, Zone 2, Lagos, is meant to use entertainment to fight crime and delinquency in the country. It was hosted by CSP Dolapo Badmos.

  • Why Bambam, Rico may leave BBNaija tomorrow

Following the exit of Anto from the Big Brother Naija show last Sunday, tension of eviction continues, as another housemate will be sacked during the live eviction show tomorrow.

Recall that The Nation predicted that Anto or Bambam may be evicted last Sunday, going by comments by fans which indicate the popularity of each housemate.

It has been observed that the popularity of Bambam has not improved just like that of her partner, Teddy A. Bambam has been widely criticized for being pretentious, thus, with Anto out, Bambam may likely be the housemate to be evicted tomorrow, unless something unusual happens.

The unusual happened last week when after publishing the results of the votes, it was observed that Lolu scored higher than Teddy A whom some believe is one of the top contenders for the coveted prize of N45 million. Such unusual situation fired by fans of Lolu to improve his chances at the prize, is what Bambam needs to scale through tomorrow’s hurdle.

As it stands, the two housemates with less popularity among fans are Bambam and Rico, whose popularity outside the house has not been so tested.

Award-winning Nigerian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer, Chinedu Okoli, better known as Flavour has said that when it comes to music, impairments do not exist. This, he said, is given to the fact that music is spiritual.

According to the artiste, who featured a visually impaired Liberian, Semah, there are no limitations as to whom he chooses to work with.

“I was introduced to Semah through Masterkraft and traditional Queen Ruler, Juli Endee during my trip to Liberia last year. Semah performed at the Liberia Peace Cultural Centre. His vocals, intonation and confidence blew me away,” he recalls.

  • I’ve been set in my ways, Seun Kuti says as he releases childhood pic

Seun Kuti, scion of the late musical legend Fela Kuti, on Thursday released a childhood picture of his that leaves little in doubt of the tenacious spirit that runs in the Kutis.

“Man how does one look older than his grown self na!” he started on Facebook, describing the picture in which he looks straight and focused at the camera.

“My mum used to tell me she used to literarily cry when I was a baby Cos I was such an old soul. She would ask the ancestors why they chose her, a first time mum and young woman to be raising such an old man.  I wasn’t an easy child to raise socially because I was pretty much set in my ways since forever, very immovable and a child that fulfilled a prophecy (story for another day) and didn’t shed a single tear when I was born, she said after spanking me and I was still staring at the doctor like Osho ( wizard) they had no choice but to stab me with a needle to make me cry and be a part of the human world of pain I guess. There were 43 women in labour at the same hospital on the day I was born. I was born early enough at 3 pm but no other baby was born that day. Make of that what U will!”

Since the early 20th century, members of the Kuti family have always been a dominant force in the socio-cultural milieu of the country. His grandfather was the founder of the Nigerian Union of Teachers as well the Nigerian Union of Students, his grandmother was a woman activist and the first woman to drive a car and his father, Fela Kuti, was the founder of Afrobeats and socio-political activist.

Presently, Seun leads his father’s Egypt 80 Band and has also continued the family tradition of advocacy. He describes his music as Struggle Music.

  • Time for co-production treaties

Considering the history of the Nigerian motion picture industry from the post-colonial era, it may be right to say the business of filmmaking started between 1960 and 1970 as a result of increase in production, especially from the Western Nigeria, when former theatre practitioners such as Hubert Ogunde and Moses Olaiya took their art to the big screen. The Indigenization Decree of the Yakubu Gowon regime which demanded the transfer of ownership of about 300 film theatres from their foreign owners to Nigerians resulted in more Nigerians playing active roles in the cinema and film business.

But notwithstanding the rise and rise that has brought the industry to the Nollywood era today, one of the factors that has mitigated against Nigeria from being called a full-fledged film industry is the absence of bilateral collaboration in form of MoU or treaty with other countries.

The South African film industry may not have recorded quantum success but one South African film to achieve international acclaim was ‘The Gods Must Be Crazy’ in 1980. And in recent times, ‘District 9’, an action/science-fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp. The film which was a critical and commercial success worldwide was nominated for Best Picture at the 82nd Academy Awards. Other notable films are ‘Tsotsi,’ which won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006 as well as U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, which won the Golden Bear at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival.

There is no doubt that South Africa, having been opened to other film nations through bilateral cooperation, has earned these feats based on technical development, co-productions, tax rebate, and playing the international film politics.

Although, Nigeria has desired bilateral relationship with other countries, the best it has got were film grants from foreign embassies and development agencies which have no doubt benefitted some filmmakers. Until the incumbent government, the creative industry was under the Ministry of Information that is not constitutionally empowered to sign a treaty with other countries. However, for the first time, there is a feasible move by the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) for collaboration with Morocco for the development of the creative sectors of both counties.

The NFC reported that the discussions are on motion picture co-production treaty between both countries, collaboration between motion picture industries of both countries and cross country collaborations, joint film production, including documentaries, capacity building, festival development, content sales and access to project funding.

The agency believes that when finally sealed through the signing of a Bilateral Memorandum of Understanding and Treaty, Nigeria’s creative industry is expected to witness a leap in its growth through the inflow of direct investment, with measurable impact on the nation’s economy.

Managing Director of NFC, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, led Nigeria’s delegation to the discussion in Morocco, with other delegates, including Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Art and Culture, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, NFC’s Head of Production and Industry Support Services, Mr. Edmund Peters,  Head of NFC Abuja Zonal Office, Mrs. Halima Oyelade, and Mohammed Gamul, a film practitioner from Kano State.

Taking a cue from South Africa, the country has entered into co-production treaties with Canada (1997), Italy (2003), Germany (2004) and the United Kingdom (2007), France (2010), New Zealand (2011) and Ireland (2012). South Africa will continue to enter into future co-production treaties with various countries for the benefit of the industry.

The effect of these agreements, as explained on the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) website is that a film or television program which is approved as an official co-production, is regarded as a national production of each of the co-producing countries, and is therefore eligible to apply for any benefits or programs of assistance available in either country. An additional advantage is that each of the co-producers brings access to their domestic market.

  • Mistura leads campaign against YouTube pirates

Yoruba actors, led by UK-based thespian Mistura Asunramu are set to campaign against online piracy, whereby some YouTube channels promote fake movies with the posters of original movies.

Tagged #Youtubepiracymuststop, Mistura called on her colleagues to support the campaign, and fight piracy.

“I have noticed that our movies no longer have values on YouTube because of some bad stations,” she said.

“We are not done with DVD piracy which has actually disorganized the industry yet you bring it on the only platform we depend on for now. Whereby you put old movies which you never paid for and use a new picture we post on IG and even use the titles of the trending movies then also put an old film as Part 2 for a trending movie.

“My recent movie ‘Wicked Soul’ is on Apata TV, but any mistake of pressing the title you will see like four films with the same title and picture of the same cast. This is not encouraging because even YouTube tend to be giving advert to all the bad movies they have about 200 stations both for Yoruba and English movies. Please let’s keep flagging them if we can or repost if you are affected. This must stop.

“Let Nollywood artist eat the fruit of their labour, we spend our hard earned money to produce our movies and we do a lot of promo to keep our titles; top diminishing us, stop misrepresenting us, let’s live our life.”

According to Yewande Adekoye, the acts of these channels have dropped the earnings of the authentic actors the pirates use other peoples’ titles to promote their own old movies.

“They even go as far as stealing poster designs of these latest trending movies and label these movies with names of actors that are not even in the movie at all just to pull traffic,” she said.

Yewande also advised the pirates not to let their bad acts Nollywood.

“Please don’t spoil the YouTube business for everyone. Stop using fake cast list, stop stealing other people’s movie titles, poster designs e. t. c. You might think the trick is pulling traffic for you now, but at the end of the day, the channel will lose its credibility and all your viewers and subscribers will migrate to a more credible channel. Please stop shooting yourself in the foot, don’t spoil the YouTube business for those who are credible and are interested in serving their viewers with top quality entertainment. Stop irritating YouTube Yoruba movie lovers with all these lies and deceit. You are killing Nollywood if you are one of those doing this.”

Another actress Wumi Olabimtan also said: “Counterfeit YouTubers are opportunist animals. They eat food at the easiest place. Please don’t just flag the video, bring those channels down, so that they learn in a hard way.”
