No fewer than three persons in Kobi community in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) have died of cholera.

The community, a densely populated rural settlement a few kilometres away from Asokoro District, is said to have been ravaged by cholera for the past two weeks.

A senior community health officer, who works in Kobi health centre, confirmed the outbreak.

He said even the Madaki of the community had lost his sister, while he and his son were also infected.

The health officer disclosed the centre has inadequate facilities to care for cholera patients as well as drugs to use for them.

THE NATION gathered that many critical cases had been referred to some private hospitals due to the ongoing industrial action by resident doctors.

Some less acute cases were being managed by the affected persons at their various homes.

The health officer said: “Yes there is a cholera outbreak here in Kobi. We just referred one case to ECWA clinic Karu because of the doctors’ strike.

“I don’t have the accurate record of those that have died, but I know of one death, and in that same compound, about two people, I was able to manage one, but referred one to the same ECWA Clinic.

“I don’t have drugs for cholera here. AMAC people said they are not aware. We have facilities to admit patients here, but we don’t have drugs”.
