Church embarks on tree planting

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will, on Saturday, plant 1,000 coconut trees on Elegushi and Badagry beaches. This is in line with United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure clean and sustainable environment.

Director of Communications Ikpe Nkanang, at a news conference, said the project was in line with the church’s 16th yearly All-Africa Service Project (AASP).

He noted that the project would be carried out in partnership with Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency (LASPARK), Lagos State Coconut Development Agency (LASCODA), Badagry local council, among others.

Nkanang said about 75,000 men, women, children and youths of the church, as well as about 15,000 non-members, would offer about 270,000 man-hours of free service to communities all over Nigeria during the service day. He said the service project in Lagos would focus on ridding selected beaches from Badagry to Eleko of plastic and other wastes.

Head of Tree Planting and Maintenance of LASPARK Mrs. Funto Aina said it was imperative to plant trees as the bworld experiences climate change. She said it was important to maintain trees when planted, and urged the church to work with LASCODA and others.
