The police in Lagos have arrested a gardener at Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri over the death of an SS3 pupil, Adagun Rafiu, aged 16.
The suspect, Femi Aderonmu, according to a statement by spokesman Bala Elkana, had engaged Rafiu in a fight around 4:40pm on May 15 on Oke-Olu Road, Iponri, Surulere, Lagos Mainland.
Elkana said during the fight, Rafiu slumped, became unconscious and was taken to Smith Medical Hospital, Surulere where he died.
He said the school’s management reported the matter to the police division at about 2:40pm on May 16, which led to the arrest of the suspect.
“Eyewitness accounts show that the deceased was returning home with his friends after writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the suspect blocked him on the way, pulled him down on the accusation that the deceased had insulted him.
“Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba, have visited the crime scene. The body has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy. The suspect has been arrested and will be charged to court for murder,” Elkana said.
