One hundred and sixty small business owners in Apapa Local Government Area have received a total of N16 million. The beneficiaries who were joined by graduate students of the 7th Skill Acquisition Programme organised by the council, received their cheques from the Council chairman Owolabi Adele during the empowerment programme held at the council secretariat, Apapa.

Adele said the initiative was to make them self-reliant.

“We are empowering 160 small business owners in our local government and also graduating 48 students who were taught various skills. We advise you not to celebrate but invest in profitable ventures.

“When this is done, you will be able to contribute your own quota by paying your levies, rate and taxes to the government,” he said.

The council boss said the council would empower another 48 graduating students of the Skill Acquisition programme with different equipment of hairdressing, fashion design, cosmetics, hats and beads, and textiles.

This, he said, would make them independent.

According to him, the council had introduced a special welfare package for the staff by giving a grant of N1 million to 30 staff members in a month to improve their livelihood and increase their attitude to work.

Another set of 30 council workers, Adele said, would benefit from the programme next month.

He said the council was presently sponsoring over 70 students within the area in higher institutions.
