Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Health, Dominic Ukpong, has donated 355 bags of rice to the physically challenged, village heads and others in Eket Local Government Area of the state.

Donating the food item in Eket on Wednesday, Ukpong, represented by his wife, Nelly, said that the gesture was to cushion the effects of COVID-19 lockdown on the people.

He said that the gesture was “a token” to the less privilege and vulnerable at a trying times such as this.

A total of 100 bags of rice were given to the village heads, 45 bags to the physically challenged and 20 bags each to 11 wards in the local government area.

“The food might not go round everybody but look for families in the villages that are the poorest of the poor.

“Ensure that it gets to the families that are really struggling to survive and that is the most important,” Ukpong said.

The commissioner stressed the importance of extending hands of fellowship to the people during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

He advised the people to adhere to the preventive tips or measures against the pandemic.

He commended Gov. Udom Emmanuel for having confidence in him and appointing him commissioner for health.

Receiving the item, Mr Kufre Ekpe, the Leader of Eket Legislature, thanked the commissioner for the palliative, describing it as “mother of all palliatives.”

“Since we started getting palliatives in Eket, this is the first time we are given 20 bags of rice per ward,” he said.

Ekpe prayed for God’s guidance and protection for the commissioner in all his endeavours.

He called on other stakeholders to emulate Ukpong in order to ameliorate the suffering of the people during the sit-at-home order by the state government. (NAN)
