COVID-19: Thailand records 38 new cases, one more death

Thailand has recorded 38 new COVID-19 cases and one death, the lowest daily increase since the kingdom imposed a six-hour nationwide night curfew last Friday.

This brings the tally in the kingdom to 2,258 cases and 27 deaths. A total of 824 patients have recovered and returned home.

A 54-year-old Thai man who had visited entertainment outlets before was the latest fatality reported in the kingdom.

Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesperson Thaweesilp Wissanuyothin said Bangkok recorded the highest number of cases with 1,201 while Phuket has 138; Nonthaburi, 134; and Samut Prahan, 99.

“The 2,258 COVID-19 cases reported in the kingdom include 525 Thais who returned from abroad, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Europe, Pakistan and the United States, and tested positive in the last two weeks,” he said at a daily briefing on COVID-19 here today.

Following the sharp increase in imported cases, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) yesterday announced an extension of the ban on all international passenger flights to the kingdom until April 18 to contain the pandemic.

The ban came into effect last Saturday and had been set to run until midnight on Monday.

Thailand imposed a 10 pm to 4 am curfew on April 5 to curb the spread of COVID-19.

To date, a total of 1.047 people have been charged with breaking the curfew order.

Meanwhile, government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said the Cabinet today agreed to postpone the start of the school semester from May 16 to July 1 in light of the pandemic.

“The Education Ministry will revise the academic calendar accordingly,” she said.
