CWCL: Unlucky Rivers Angels crash out

Nigeria’s representative in the maiden CAF Women’s Champion League, Rivers Angels suffered their second defeat to exit the tournament yesterday after losing  with a solitary controversial goal to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa  in their second Group B match at Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo.

A first-half goal from the South African champion ended Nigeria’s hope of advancing to the second round as the Edwin Okon-tutored side are bottom of the table with no point from their two matches. The team had earlier lost 3-0 to Morocco’s ASFAR in their opening game of the competition.

However, Kenya’s Vihiga Queens revived their semifinal qualification hopes, beating Morocco’s ASFAR to throw Group B opens. Violet Wanyonyi scored the first goal for the Queens at the 9th  minute, as the Kenyans dominated the opening half.

After the break, Tereza Engesha scored the second goal, as ASFAR tried to get back into the game but lacked the final finish. Vihiga Queens will face Rivers Angels on Friday at 30 June Stadium while ASFAR clashes with Mamelodi Sundowns on the same day at El Salam Stadium.
