The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Fountain University, Osogbo (FUO) in Osun State, Prof Amidu Sanni has warned elected politicians to deliver their electoral promises to the masses or face a revolt.
Sanni spoke at Ramadan Lecture organised Misbaudeen Islamic Centre (MIC) in Agege, Lagos.
According to him, all the past politicians, who failed to uphold the principles of accountability, do not end well.
He urged the politicians to uphold the principles of accountability, good moral standard and fairness to all so that they can have a good story to tell at the end of the day and in the hereafter.
“There’s hardly anyone we can point at today as great people among those who failed to deliver on their electoral promises. If you are a politician, you should do well in order to have your name in the good book of history,” he said.
The FUO VC warned masses against putting their entire burden on politicians.
“The first thing for the masses is to be upright and not put their responsibilities on the politicians. If you take all your responsibilities to politicians, the politicians will be forced into corruption,” he said.
Chief Imam of Adangba Central Mosque Sheikh Abdul Rahman Adangba, said promises made during electioneering campaign should not be void ones.
“It should be something they will be able to uphold and redeem as much as they would want to come next time. It’s only once you can fool people, you cannot fool them all the time. But, when you fulfil your campaign promises, it means you have opened a door for the love of the people and for them to represent you another time,” he said.
Chairman of Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board (LSMPWB) Dr Tajudeen Yusuf warned politicians not differentiate between God consciousness and their political affiliations.
According to him, politics and godliness should not be divided.
The Associate Professor at the University of Lagos said life is one whole system.
“So, by the time you see yourself as a Muslim or a Christian in one side and a politician on the other side, you create a double identity and that will create competition, and Islam encourages us that we must be Muslims wherever we find ourselves, whether in a political, economic or social atmosphere. We must not forget that our first allegiance is to Allah, our creator, who will take us into account on the Last Day,” he said.
The don said political offices should be made less attractive to attract people who truly want to serve because “the people in the position of authority should be serving the people and not the people serving them. So, we are saying let’s make it less attractive for those who want to embezzle, loot the commonwealth of the country into penury. Nigeria can be better if the people in charge of our socio-political and economic affairs are God-fearing and always conscious of accountability to God on the Last Day.”
MIC Founder Alhaji Misbaudeen Bolarinwa agreed that politicians who failed to deliver their promises will lose the confidence of the people.
Besides that, he said, they will not achieve any meaningful development while in office and the prosperity of their children may be in jeopardy.
“There is nothing masses can do. We cannot take them to court. What we can do is to take them to the court of God and He knows how to judge and he will not take a bribe. What we know is that subsequently, we are not going to vote them and that would have been already too late. Allah will also punish them in the grave and in the hereafter if they fail to fulfil their promises to the people.
“What they said was they were going to serve us, but as soon as they get there, they serve only themselves and nobody else. That’s why we want to focus on politics and governance. We are trying to call their attention to the bad habit of not fulfilling promises so that when they get there, they will have the fear of God that whatever they do in this world will be accounted for in the hereafter,” he said.
