A contractor who collected N900million for the St Savior Road in Edo State abandoned the project, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Acting Managing Director Dr Joi Nunieh has said.
Governor Godwin Obaseki had in October last year awarded the contract for the construction of the 15km road at N3.55billion.
The road is expected to be completed in 30 months.
Dr Nunieh expressed surprise that no work was done on the road despite the payment to the contract.
Speaking when she led the NDDC Interim Management Committee to inspect the road, she said NDDC’s records show that N900million was for 25 per cent of “job done”.
According to her, nothing was done by the contractor as claimed.
“The NDDC book says 25 per cent of the job was done but nothing was done.
“The state government has taken over construction of the road for which NDDC has paid N900 million,” she said.
The visit is part of the forensic audit of NDDC ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.
