Ekiti pledges to tackle youth unemployment

Ekiti State Government has reiterated its commitment to tackle the problem of youth unemployment.

Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development Michael Awopetu said the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration would remain undaunted to stem the tide of youth unemployment.

Awopetu added that the government has put in place initiatives to boost employability of youths as part of its efforts to create job opportunities.

He spoke in Ado Ekiti yesterday at a town meeting organised by the New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative (NIGAWD) in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID), National Democratic Institute (NDI) and UKAID.

He said the government would not rest until youth unemployment is reduced to the barest minimum, assuring the youths that the administration would continue to implement policies and programmes aimed at decimating poverty and unemployment.

Awopetu urged the youths to explore the existing initiatives put in place, saying within the limits of available resources, the government would keep placing premium on youth development.

Founder and Executive Director, NIGAWD Mrs. Abimbola Aladejare identified five key areas that needed government’s intervention, which include employment, education, health, agriculture and poverty reduction.

Aladejare called for youth-focused reforms in all the identified areas, saying the youth represent larger percentage of the state population.
