The Elegushi of Ikate Kingdom, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, has been recognised and awarded for his contribution to culture and tradition by LagosTimes Excellence Awards 2018.
Chairman of the awards committee Victor Ganzallo said Oba Elegushi was singled out for the award due to his unparalleled commitment to Yoruba culture and tradition, despite his youthfulness and the upscale location of his kingdom.
According to him, nominees were carefully selected from a few people who have impacted the lives of Lagos residents, and their community, and in so doing, are seen as mentors and role models.
Oba Elegushi thanked LagosTimes for the honour. According to him, our culture, tradition and heritage should not be treated with levity.
The monarch hinted that preservation of our culture and tradition should be one of the key responsibilities of parents.
He said: “The preservation of our culture and tradition lies solely with us as parents; we must not abdicate that duty to the teachers. Our children are our future, and the only way to preserve our culture is to teach the about it early.”
The monarch also frowned at erroneous believe that engaging in cultural practice is fetish, saying those who peddle this belief are ill-informed.
The LagosTimes Excellence Awards is dedicated to recognising and appreciating people and organisations, whose efforts have directly or indirectly contributed to the growth and development of Lagos State.
