ELLA MENSAH: Marriage is not an achievement

Beautiful, bold and talented, Ella Mensah is an actress to look out for in the movie industry. The sexy diva is one of the few Ghanaian actresses plying her trade in Nollywood and Ghollywood. Ella made a name for herself by starring in the Nigerian film, ‘Crime to Christ’. The Trans African College graduate, in this interview with SAMPSON UNAMKA talks about her career, relationship, lifestyle and business plans.

TELL us about your sojourn into acting?

I’ve been acting since 2012, 2years after I gave birth to my son… before then, I was a newscaster…

When would you say has been your highest point as an actress?

My highest point as an actress was when a president of one of our African countries recognised me and even and called me by my name. I remember that day; I was shocked and overwhelmed. I mean, he is a president and I didn’t expect him to even know me, not to talk of knowing my name.

Have you ever had to sleep with a producer to get a script you desperately wanted?

First of all, no script is worth me sleeping with any producer and secondly, actresses like me are not approached. Those producers who sleep with actresses for roles can’t approach me! I’m not in their leagues. They respect me too much to even try that bullshit and again, it is has never happened to me! So, hell no!

You have been described by different names; sultry, sexy, controversial, among others. How has this affected you personally?

Frankly speaking, I didn’t know I have been described as sultry and controversial. Sexy, yes I am aware, but still, it doesn’t affect me in anyway. People’s opinions don’t define me. I know who I am and I am ok with that.

You seem not to be bothered about settling down with a man

I don’t know why people think settling down with a man is an achievement. Society can do better! Who said it’s compulsory to marry? Don’t get me wrong; if and when I am ready, I will. When I feel like it or when I want it. I don’t think I’m ready now.

Do you buy the idea that a woman without a crown is worthless?

What kinda crown are we talking about?

Would you rather be a second wife than settle with someone who is just starting up?

I think the biggest mistake any woman will make right now in this our generation is to settle with someone who is just starting up life. Because at the end of the day, he will leave you for someone else when he is finally made. Most men nowadays are not loyal; not even one per cent. So, no, I would rather be a second wife to an already made man.

Tell us about your dress sense

My dressing always depicts my mood. I dress exactly how I feel at that particular moment. It could be funky, sexy, classy or sassy; it just depends on how I feel.

Have you ever been embarrassed for appearing in public in a particular outfit?

No, I have not been embarrassed for appearing in public in a particular outfit. It has never happened and I hope it stays that way, because I can’t begin to imagine how that will feel like. Maybe I will cry if it should ever happen to me.

What movie brought you into limelight?

In Ghana, the movie that actually brought me to limelight is a movie called ‘Crime to Christ’ by Abdul Salam and it  featured myself, Nadia Buari, Majid Micheal and a lot of other people, whiles in Nigeria, I think it is a movie called ‘Educated House Maids’, featuring myself, Francis Otega and some Nollywood stars; that movie really went viral.

Who are your contemporaries in the industry?

My contemporaries in the movie industry are Genevieve Nnaji and Gabrielle Union.

How do you unwind?

I unwind by relaxing in my home or if I am outside home, in a hotel, by myself and reflecting on how far I have come and my journey so far and what’s next for me. I am my own best friend, so I love to be by myself often.

How do you maintain your looks?

I maintain my looks by drinking a lot of water every day and minding my business. I don’t gym often. I just relax and sleep a lot.

How was growing up like for you?

Growing up was good. My mom gave me everything I needed and wanted; she always made sure I was good. My father was never in my life. I met my farther when I was 19yrs old and in my first year in college and after a year, we didn’t connect so I let him be. I had a mom and dad in my mother, She did everything for me till I was 18yrs and I promised her to be a better person and here I am. So growing up for me was great.

Anything new; what should fans expect?

Yes so many things are coming up in Ella Mensah’s brand. I am building a home for the older people who are homeless and my hair company @hairbyellamensah in New York is growing. New projects are on their way, so my fans should expect a lot next year from me.
