A RETIRED police commissioner and Chairman of Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, Effiong Esiet, has backed a call for the overhaul of the Nigeria Police Force, to make it responsive, humane and civil.

He spoke at a Security Management and Intelligence Summit organised by the Eagle Crime Awareness and Prevention Initiative (ECAPI), held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

The event tagged: “Community Policy and Effect of Coopting Retired Police Officers in the Modern Day Security Arrangement and Intelligence Gathering”, attracted police officers, vigilance groups, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials, security firms, among others.

Esiet, reacting to the recent alleged killing of a Remo Stars Football Club player by a member of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, said it is obvious that there are problems in the Force, noting that the need to reform it is urgent.

Esiet, who decried the killing of the footballer, said that that was not the Police they left behind.

“There is problem in the training of members of the Force. There is a great difference between the training received today and when we were there,” he said.

ECAPI President Samuel Eniola Adam urged the government to fashion out ways to make the highly trained and skilled individuals relevant in modern day security arrangement.

He said that retired police officers must be relevant in today’s security arrangement.

“The nation spent huge sums to train some of them abroad and when they retire, they retire with the knowledge and experience they have acquired over the years,” Adam said.
