Farmers urged to prevent unforeseen fire outbreaks

The Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Adeola Odedina, has urged farmers and inhabitants of the state to guide against fire outbreaks  in the farms during the dry or harmattan season.

He said the state government had placed priority on agriculture to make the state the food basket of the nation and this should not be destabilised by avoidable fire incidence.

Dr. Odedina enjoined farmers to adopt safety measures by clearing bushes around their farms, avoid unnecessary bush burning, adding that portable fire extinguishers are expected to installed and erect fire traces in their farms and handle naked fire with utmost care.

He advised them to store fuels, pesticides, medicines and other chemicals in a fire-retardant enclosure or secure location away from heat sources and combustible materials.

He enjoined them to mount fire alarms on poultry and other livestock farms and ensuring refueling, storage and maintenance of motorised equipment were kept away from livestock.

He said farmers should try to provide adequate ventilation in order to prevent self-ignition of produce in warehouses, avoid careless dropping of lighted cigarette on ground, harvest their crops early and ensure products were in perfect storage condition.
