The National Leader of Afenifere Egbe llosiwaju Yoruba, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, has urged the Southwest governors to work with all relevant stakeholders to resolve issues standing in the way of the Amotekun initiative.

He said this must be done in a manner consistent with the Southwest’s tradition of mutual respect, calmness, decorum, wisdom, focus and perseverance in handling of issues, no matter how delicate.

The group hailed the governors and the security agencies for the noticeable decline in the kidnappings and other heinous crimes in the region.

“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty and safety. Therefore, we commend without any reservation all the Southwest governors for the brilliant and creative initiative that led to the birth of Amotekun, the regional zonal cooperation vehicle designed to address our common security challenges in a manner that will strengthen the existing security architecture of the Southwest as well as that of the nation in a mutually rewarding relationship,” he said.

Fasanmi appealed to the governors and political leaders to continue to drive the process and not lose this initiative to anarchists, brief case activists and overnight agitators “who no doubt are waiting in the wings to hijack it in line with their unwholesome agenda. We appeal to the Federal Government and all relevant agencies to cooperate with governments and peoples of the Southwest for the smooth implementation of Amotekun, which will complement the efforts of the Federal Government and enable a role in securing lives and properties in the region.

He said: “This is consistent with the spirit of regional cooperation and it is a home grown initiative to address the challenges that confront us in our march towards peace and prosperity.

“We invite the 36 states of the federation to explore bilateral, multilateral as well as regional collaboration in solving problems of security and challenges of economic development where applicable.”

Fasanmi added: “We call on government to increase the pace of loot recovery and continue to take all steps necessary to curb wastages and other excesses in our public space. We appeal to the governments and people of the southwest not to relent in their effort to promote and enhance the status of Yoruba language especially in our schools.”
