The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service Department is investigating the cause of a fire that occurred at the old Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) old store.

When The Nation visited the scene yesterday, all was calm.

The workers went about their duties as if nothing happened.

Some of them told The Nation that the old store was the only place the fire affected.

A worker, who did not want to be named, said: “The fire occurred on Saturday at Annex One. It was an office near the canteen.”

A statement by FIRS’ Head of Communications and Servicom Department, Wahab Gbadamosi, admitted that “there was a fire incident at the store, by FIRS canteen at Annex 1, Office of the Service’s headquarters, 15 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, at the 5:10 p.m on October 26, 2019″.

The fire, he said, “affected the store by the FIRS canteen where disused/old computers awaiting disposal are often kept. Also burnt were envelopes, printing paper and stationeries”.

FIRS assured the general public that nothing critical happened to FIRS operations.

Officials of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service arrived on the scene few minutes after the fire started and worked with security and safety officers of the FIRS, to put out the fire within two hours.

FIRS Executive Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Fowler, visited the scene for a first-hand assessment.

Officials of the FCT Fire Service Department also visited the scene again yesterday to ascertain the cause of the fire.
