Foundation launches N100m fund for girl-child education

A Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) Ajesola Solarin Majekodunmi Foundation (ASMAF) has celebrated its 10th Anniversary with the launch of a N100million fund for the promotion of girl-child education.

At the celebration held at Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos, which coincided with the founder Prof Ajesola Solarin Majekodunmi’s 80th birthday, Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi  II, who urged the that the issue of girl-child education be taken serious, sought more investment and political will by the government to boost girl-child education.

Emir Sanusi II, a former Central Bank governor, rooted for the empowerment of more women in the workplace and political offices, adding that women at the apex bank contributed to his success. He said if women were given equal opportunities, they perform brilliantly.

Chairman of the occasion Dr Christopher Kolade said since gender balancing was not working,  men and women should be well prepared to strive for opportunities. He said there is no difference between men and women, and that it depends on their level of exposure.

Mrs Majekodunmi, a retired professor of Ophthalmology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), said she founded ASMAF out of passion to give hope to the hopeless girl-child and voice to the voiceless girls. Noting the motto of the NGO, she said when you train a woman, you empower mankind. She said when you develop the potential of the girl-child you would take the country to greater heights because carry women carry more responsibilities and more economic viability for development of womanhood.
