Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice has urged the Federal Government to speed up clean up of Ogoni in Rivers State.

National Coordinator Comrade Sheriff Mulade, who made the call at the weekend, also called on stakeholders, including the Rivers State government and the affected communities, to collaborate with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to ensure the project is completed early.

The Federal Government kicked off the Ogoni clean up on June 2, 2016.

Mulade noted that the clean up, remediation and restoration of the degraded Ogoniland will ensure a ‘safe environment’ for its residents.

He said: “Findings and recommendations of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) prooves the land and ground water have been adversely contaminated. The community’s source of drinking water contains a dangerous concentration of benzene substance, 900 times more than the recommended standard for drinking water, and the soil contamination is more than five metres deep in many areas that were studied.”

Mulade admonished the Federal Government to show more concern for Nigerians’ health by ensuring total compliance to environmental guidelines and regulations.
