Group seeks involvement in mango export

The President, National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), Tola Faseru, has called for increased involvement of Nigerians in the multimillion dried mango market.

Dried mangoes are eaten in slices as snacks or used in the food processing industry, mainly in breakfast cereals.

Faseru said dried mango remains an underexploited opportunity as well as a huge foreign exchange earner.

He noted, however, that the sector has to comply with packaging standards and improve quality.

According to him, there is a growing demand for dried mango abroad especially certified dried mango.

Once the harvest has been completed, the next step is to focus on how to get the drying process certified.

The infrastructures needed are drying machines and warehouses capable of drying the mangoes.

He said proper investment in machinery would mean farmers would be to receive higher prices for their fruits.

According to him, the sector needs more domestic processors and more mangoes prepared for official export to foreign markets.
