Harness Nigeria’s potentials, CAN urges Buhari

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to harness the potentials of Nigerians, especially its youth population.

Its President Samson Olasupo Ayokunle said this at a breakfast meeting with the Christian Press Association of Nigeria (CPAN) with the theme ‘Christian response to global persecution’ in Lagos.

Ayokunle pointed out the ability to develop and grow the country is available in Nigeria and with Nigerians but asked “where is the political leadership to harness them?”

He said the spate of kidnapping, banditry and other civil unrest will stop if the current administration reduced unemployment, among the teeming young population in Nigeria, stating an idle person is a willing tool for the Devil.

Ayokunle noted that Nigeria has a huge demographic of young people with strengths, energies, tenacity, creativity and resilience to develop the country, if government puts in place programmes and activities geared toward harnessing their potentials for profitable and productive ventures.

He stated the President must pay attention to the issue of social welfare and improve greatly on infrastructures as miscreants have continued to take advantage of bad portions on the roads, especially highways to kidnap and dispossess people of their belongings.

The CAN President also said the government should respect courts of law and be fair to all Nigerians, adding “if government disrespect the law court, such government is a lawless government?”

Ayokunle called on all Nigerians to promote fairness, mutual respect and justice.

Speaking on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, the CAN helmsman lamented Christians do not have the boldness like Esther to fight for their faith.

“Most ‘Christians’ in politics places political advantages above the spiritual and that have contributed to the continued persecution of the church in Nigeria,” he said.

Ayokunle pointed out Churches cannot get Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) in some parts of the north, which according to him is against the constitution of Nigeria.

Ayokunle also berated the lack of unity among Christians to speak and pursue a common objective.

“The Church is so rich but cannot put resources together for a single purpose,” he said.

For those calling on the Christian body to openly support a political party, Ayokunle stated CAN is not a political organisation.

Such move, he said, will pitch the church against other Nigerians and put the church at a disadvantage from the very start.
