AAUA Luminaries and UNIBEN Royals have joined UNIMAID Desert Warriors and FUTMINNA Transformers to play in the quarter-finals of the on-going Higher Institutions Football League (HiFL).
UNIBEN Royals ousted the reigning champion UNICAL Malabites while the AAUA Luminaries saw-off 2019 Super Four finalists OAU Giants in a thrilling match played at Ile Ife.
The Malabites and the Giants could not score the desired number of goals to edge their opponents despite playing their second leg games at home.
AAUA Luminaries held the OAU Giants to a 1-1 draw to qualify for the quarter-finals on the away goals rule. StanbicIBTC Man-of-the Match Olaniyi Mayowa scored for the OAU Giants in the 55th minute. However, Olawale Oluwabunkunmi of AAUA Luminaries broke the heart of the home fans led by the OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede when he scored in the 92nd minute.
Meanwhile, UNICAL Malabites could not get the two goals needed to edge the UNIBEN Royals at home. Uloko Simon gave the Malabites the lead in the 45th minute but the Royals would not let go of the advantage.
The Royals qualified on a 4-3 goals aggregate having won the first leg 4-2 in Benin but Malabites’ Ujah Christian won the StanbicIBTC Man-of-the-Match Award.
In Maiduguri,UNIMAID Desert Warriors showed class as they defeated BUK Stallions 3-2 to qualify at home. UNIMAID Desert Warriors qualified on 5-3 goals aggregate after winning both legs.
