A young man, simply identified as Eguono, was reportedly knocked down by a hit-and-run driver, Sunday night, by Airport Junction in Uvwie council area of Delta state.
The Nation learnt that the incident occurred at about 11:45pm, besides Forte filling station.
The deceased, said to be in his late 30s, usually played football in the area and was known to do different kinds of labour to make a living.
An unidentified person was said to have been hit also, in the accident, but managed to get up from the scene to seek aid.
A witness told The Nation that the deceased was well-known in the neighbourhood and was relaxing in drinking bar with friends, when he received a phone call to help fix a cement truck that broke down across the road.
“But on his way back, he was knocked down by the vehicle. People gathered but were afraid to rush him to a hospital. We heard him grunting till about past 12am when he became still.
“His parents are late and he lives with his siblings around. He is an Isoko boy. When he was hit, he was thrown to the side of the road and fell face down, with blood oozing from his ears, nose and mouth. The driver of the vehicle ran away.
“It was this morning that one keke man (tricycle rider) came and said ‘we have to turn him so that he can be identified’. It was someone who came and seeing the clothes he wore yesterday, recognized him. Because his face was swollen. The sister came too and was crying,” the source narrated.
The witness added that it was friends that took the body away from the scene at about 8am.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya said the case may not have been reported to the Police.
