Kano State Commissioner for Health, Aminu Tsanyawa has stated that the state has been free of poliomyelitis for six years (72 months) now.
Tsanyawa, who spoke while marking the World Polio Day, said: “Kano is today certified as polio-free with remarkable achievements and huge progress recorded in Routine Immunisation (RI) in the state.”
He gave the theme for this year’s World Polio Day as: “One Day. One Focus. Ending Polio,” saying the objective was to completely eradicate polio from all parts of the world and make the world polio-free.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to healthcare delivery, ensuring that all eligible children must be immunised through various programmes.
He said Kano State would utilise and sustain its equipment and human resources gained during all the polio programmes.
Tsanyawa said that with huge resources, the state had established Local Government Routine Immunisation Coordination Centre in all the 44 local government areas.
“Other gains include procurement and installation of two cubic-meter walk-in cold rooms for the cold store, including the building of a new store for the walk-in cold rooms.
“The installation of Solar Direct Drives (SDDs) at ward levels and the sustainability of in-sourced delivery of vaccines to the last mile.
“Development of Reaching Every Ward (REW) micro plan by all health facilities providing RI services, as well as conduction of reconciliation meetings between ward heads and service providers on monthly basis at village heads’ residences.”
