THE Katsina State Government has blamed increasing security challenges and banditry attacks in most local government areas as responsible for growing scarcity of livestock eggs in most markets and shops in the state.
Investigation conducted by The Nation in the state recently revealed scarcity of livestock eggs in most shops and supermarkets in the state. Even visits to most tea joints and eatery places like restaurants clearly showed scarcity of livestock eggs for consumptions
The Special Adviser to Governor Aminu Bello Masari on Livestock, Dr Lawal Usman Bagiwa, who made the above disclosure during an interview with The Nation in his office in Katsina, said scarcity of livestock eggs is not as a result of cost of feeds but growing insecurity, lack of farmers and inability of farming capacity to attain up to 70% production capacity.
He said, “Poultry is a seasonal harvesting activity; again cost of products like maize, feed and supplements have sky rocketed.”
“Production of broilers is usually within one week, while production of layers is usually within 18 weeks.”
The Special Adviser further appealed to citizens of Katsina State to be patient with the state government, assuring that the situation will soon return to normal in the state.
Findings by The Nation revealed that a half crate of 15 broiler eggs sells for N900 at any retailing shop in Katsina while a full crate of 30 broiler eggs sells for N1800.
