By Oyebola Owolabi

Lagos State and WaterAid Nigeria have agreed to ensure that every Lagosian has access to potable water by 2030.

‘Water for All’ is number six of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which the United Nations (UN) said must be attained by 2030.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Thursday at Alausa, Ikeja between the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LSWRC) and WaterAid Nigeria.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tunji Bello said the partnership would provide a better way of developing capacity to manage water resources.

He described the occasion as historic, saying the partnership signified a renewal of something good for Lagos and Nigeria.

LSWRC Executive Secretary Funke Adepoju said the value of clean and safe water, delivered safe and healthy, at the right time, quality and quantity, could not be underestimated.

She said: “Capacity building furthers an organisation’s ability to do new things and improve what they currently do. We understand that the need to strengthen institutional capacity and regulatory framework bench-marking against international best practices must happen if we want to improve performance and enhance our ability to function as a regulatory body.”
