LAGOS State Government has begun the training of 800 chartered accountants in the state’s public sector for effectiveness in service delivery.
The training, which began on Tuesday, is to ensure that public sector accountants and finance professionals across the state are equipped with the right capacities to apply the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) to account reporting.
The training, carried out by the Ministry of Finance, was meant to complement the initial transition programme, which ended in 2018.
Finance Commissioner Dr. Rabiu Olowo said the training is designed to ensure accountants in the state’s public sector are updated with the evolving standards of IPSAS.
He said his office has no greater priority than to build the capacities of the public accountants.
Olowo said that the effort was in line with the current administration’s commitment to ensuring that best global standards of accounting techniques were adopted in public sector accounting.
He described the training programme as uncommon in terms of the quality of training and the number (800) of the trainees, which he said no state in the country has ever matched up with.
