Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission is to commence issuance of licenses and permit for water abstraction in the state by first quarter of 2020 which is to be launched by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Funke Femi Adepoju, made the revelation while addressing stakeholders in the water and wastewater sector in the state. She explained that the indiscriminate abstraction of water in the state needs to be regulated.
Adepoju assured the stakeholders that the commission was not established for punitive measure on the investors in the water-related sub sector of the state economy, but rather to forge a common ground for the welfare of the people in the state. She stated further that we cannot shy away from paying a fair tariff on abstraction which is a resource
According to her, the essence of the stakeholders’ engagement is to come together as partners to chart a way forward in sanitising the industry going forward as investors and government. She added that there is need to remove quacks in the system that package unsafe bottle water from wells for sale. This, she said, must stop.
In attendance at the stakeholders meeting were Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), financial institutions, Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP), Association of Water well Drilling Rig Owners Operators, among others
