To mark this year’s Tree Planting Day in the state, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) is planting 800 coconut trees, stretching from the library complex to the university main gate, about two kilometres.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Oluremi Nurudeen Olaleye, while marking the event on Ikorodu campus, said the university was keying into Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s policy to create a green environment, reduce depletion of the ozone layer and contribute to the beauty of the state.
Olaleye said the university would plant 2,000 coconut trees on Ikorodu campus before December, adding LASUSTECH had planted 400 trees before now. He noted that management’s decision to plant 2,000 coconut trees was because of the benefits, including highly nutritious edible seeds, landscape beautification, food security and its capacity to absorb heat.
Continuing, Olaleye said “the tree planting day provides avenue to implement Sustainable Development Goal 15 as it will cool and moisten the air, create oxygen, act as filtering systems to clean the air and soil by removal and sequestrations of carbon dioxide from atmosphere while shielding the ground from erosion thereby mitigating climate crisis arising from global warming.”
Present, among others, at the event were Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Dr. Kolawole G. Godonu; the Bursar, Mr. Maumo Jerry Jinadu; the Registrar, Mr. Shakirudeen Bello; Director of Information and Public Relations Mr. Olanrewaju K. Kuye; Dean of Students Affairs Dr. Oladayo Ibrahim; and Dean of School of Agriculture Mr. Adelabu Ogunbameru.
