office of Wife of the Oyo State Governor has trained the girl-child in ways to maintain menstrual hygiene. The programme was tagged: “A Day out with the Girls of Oyo State”, to commemorate ‘Menstrual Hygiene Day’ held every 19th of July.
Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde said menstrual hygiene was a significant challenge for some girls due to lack of access to good sanitary pads, clean public toilets, menstrual hygiene management and others.
She said the event was to discuss and give proper menstrual education to girls, adding that it was important for girls to know how to take care of themselves during their menstrual period.
She urged teachers to teach girls menstrual cycle and menstrual hygiene.
Mrs. Makinde thanked Governor Seyi Makinde for his support towards the success of the programme.
She also expressed gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for donating 3,000 reusable sanitary pads to the girls.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Woman Affairs, Mrs. Monilola Udoh, said research had shown that some girls missed school due to lack of sanitary items, adding that about 52 million women and young girls experienced menstruation, with almost 70 per cent of them having no access to sanitary pads.
