Man remanded for allegedly setting ablaze apartment

An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, at the weekend remanded a 38-year-old man, Oluwasegun Areegbe, in Agodi Prison for alleged setting ablaze a rented apartment.

Areegbe of 1, Obatola Street, Aroro-Makinde, Oojo, Ibadan is facing a charge of arson.

Chief Magistrate Mrs. Olubisi Ogunkanmi remanded Areegbe at Agodi Prison.

Ogunkanmi, who also sent the case file to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice, thereafter, adjourned the case till February 22 for mention.

Prosecuting Corporal Bewaji Ojo said Areegbe on January 20, at 1am, allegedly set fire to the apartment he rented.

He alleged that the defendant lit a candle in his apartment when there was a blackout, which caused the fire that razed the house and caused damage to the wall and roof.

Ojo said the razed house, property of the complainant, Mr. Toba Awolusi, was valued at N900,000.

He said the offence contravened Section 443 of the Criminal Code of Oyo State, 2000.
