The Directorate of Command Schools Services in collaboration with an Educational consultancy firm, YAPAN Ventures, organized a three-day workshop on modern teaching techniques in mathematics for Command Secondary Schools’ Teachers across Nigeria in Ikeja, Lagos.
The workshop which featured lectures in two major areas namely; “Technicalities of teaching students for a score of A1 in mathematics” and “WAEC/NECO system of marking Mathematics the real facts and methodology”, had in attendance mathematics teachers drawn from Command Secondary Schools’ across Nigeria.
The Director, DCSS, Brigadier General CA Bossman, in his welcome address disclosed that the aim of the workshop was focused at bringing mathematics teachers together to learn and to also help groom students especially when writing external mathematics exams.

He said, “Our students tend to run away from mathematics probably because they are lazy or perhaps the teachers are not teaching the students properly”. He urged the participants to pay rapt attention in learning from the resource persons assigned to facilitate various germane areas in mathematics.

In his keynote address, the Corp Commander, Directorate of Education, Brigadier General BH Mohammed who was ably represented by his Chief of staff, Brigadier General A.P Oguntola lauded the idea behind the workshop saying it was necessary to sharpen the skills of mathematics teachers in Command Secondary Schools across the country.
While commending the efforts of Command Secondary School students in mathematics, he said there was room for more improvement as the various sessions during the workshop facilitated by the mathematics experts will give room for teachers to learn from one another.
He further recommended the formation of Association of Command Secondary School Mathematics Teachers to further give room for more engagement and discourse in mathematics among the teachers.
Dr. Paul Amaechi, Managing Director, YAPAN Ventures said the workshop will expose teachers to the technicalities of the discipline. Similarly, Mr. Dauda Salau affirmed that the mathematics results of Command Secondary Schools students has been good over years, stressing that the workshop was aimed at further improving the status of the schools in the area of mathematics.
