Ahead of the NBA branch elections scheduled to holdthis month, except for a few branches with staggered election timetable, the Nigerian Bar Association has initiated a move to reduce the requirement of five monthly meeting attendance as condition precedent for eligibility for the elections. This is to accommodate the disruption of branch meetings by the pandemic
A release signed by NBA General Secretary Mr. Jonathan Gunu Taidi reads:
“Further to the notice dated May 29, 2020 the NBA President, Paul Usoro (SAN) has reduced the monthly meetings required for eligibility to vote under Article 16 (1) of the Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches from five (5) meetings to a minimum of three (3) meetings in view of the lockdown occasioned by and restrictions imposed due to Covid-19 pandemic which made it impracticable to hold branch meetings in March, April and May of 2020.
“This exercise of discretion will be presented for ratification at the National Executive Committee Meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association.
“The Branch Election Committees whose elections are scheduled to hold in June 2020 are accordingly directed to recognise three (3) meetings as the eligibility criteria to qualify to vote in the Branch Elections,” Usoro stated
