Niger workers commence strike Tuesday

By Justina Asishana

Workers in Niger state will embark on indefinite strike action from Tuesday.

This is due to the government’s inability to meet up with the 21- day ultimatum by the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC).

The Government, in its bid to prevent the strike, had paid workers on grade level 1-6 the new minimum wage while the other levels of workers were not paid.

The Government cited the unavailability of funds as the reason for the inability to pay all workers.

The decision to embark on strike was taken at the end of its Emergency Joint State Executive Council meeting at the Labour House in Minna on Monday.

The statement jointly signed by the state (NLC) Chairman, Comrade Yakubu Garba and the state Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, Comrade Tanimu Yunusa, reads: “All civil servants in Niger state to proceed on an indefinite strike action effective midnight, 4th February 2020.
