Police in Anambra state on Tuesday debunked alleged invasion of a church in Aguleri, Anambra East local government area of the state by a group of boys in the area.

An online publication had alleged suspected Umuleri boys invaded St Peter’s church, Otoucha Aguleri early in the morning and sliced a lot of worshippers with machetes.

A statement by the police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, described the report as not only false but mischievous and orchestrated by mischief makers and targeted at truncating the relative peace in the area.

He however said there was attempted robbery at the early hours of the day at residential quarters near the church, which was foiled by the police.
According to him: “The attention of the Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to online report in the social media anchored by one Odogwu Aluta that “suspected Umuleri boys invaded St Peter’s church, Otoucha Aguleri early this morning and sliced a lot of worshippers with machetes”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there was attempted robbery at the early hours of today 2/7/2019 at residential quarters near St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Otoucha which was foiled and the Command has launched aggressive manhunt for the perpetrators in order to bring them to justice.”

Mohammed stressed there was nothing to show that the incident was communal as alleged, saying no facts associated it with any community.

He warned those circulating the inciting publication to desist forthwith as anyone apprehended would face the full wrath of the law.

“The Command further assures the citizens of adequate protection and urged them to disregard the false alarm and go about their legitimate business,” he added.
