On the National Assembly invasion

SIR: The unauthorized blockage of the National Assembly and denial of access to lawmakers by masked DSS men for whatever reason is despicable, untoward and portrayed DSS as a reckless organisation operating without temperate rule of engagement.

The acting president’s swift order removing the head of DSS is not only instructive but a commendable cause of action.

However, the PDP caucus in the National Assembly coming to create a scene with protesters in the wee hours of the day when their APC counterparts are far removed from the assembly and acting on social media gossip is most unfortunate and smacks of irresponsible politicking.

From the drama that played out in the assembly where the APC caucus were visibly shut out, it is evident that the leadership of NASS has a sinister motive for coming to the assembly without their APC counterparts when they are indeed supposed to be in recess.

Is the emergency meeting meant to hold to the exclusion of a whole caucus of the assembly?

What is most odious is the playful and thespian mien of the senate president. The senate president was televised grinning and exchanging banters in the midst of PDP senators as if he has won a medal, whereas the disgraceful drama called for sober reflection and a demonstration of a bipartisan leadership.

The senate president needs to look inwards as his leadership style is so obstructionist, self-serving and an anathema to national development.

His stewardship is actually at odds with the quality expected of a person seeking election into the highest office in land over which he has defected twice, undermined governance and hell bent on bringing down the house.

Many well-meaning Nigerians are at a loss how Senator Bukola Saraki could have in good conscience put the house on recess for two months at a peak period when 2019 election budget is pending and the executive needs the legislature most to bring closure to its four years mandate.

Saraki should learn from the Acting President Yemi Osibajo who set aside partisan inclinations and defended the constitution with dignified executive panache.

It would be a disaster if this type of abhorrent tendency is allowed to persist to the point of its delinquents becoming presidential flag bearers of any political party.
