Ondo community pleads for release of detained monarch

Six months after their monarch, the Ogeleyinbo of Ayetoro, Oba Oluwambe Ojagbohunmi, was arrested and remanded in prison, the residents of Ayetoro Community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, have urged Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to intervene in his interest.

Oba Ojagbohunmi was arrested in the wake of a kingship tussle bedevilling the coastal community.

The community, in a letter of appeal, sent to Governor Akeredolu, on Friday, and signed by the Secretary of the Supreme Council of Elders, Johnson Atimishe,  pleaded for the release of their monarch.

Ojagbohunmi and a former Ambassador of African Development Bank, Micah Ajijo, had been contesting the succession right to the throne of Ogeleyinbo since February 2015.

The monarch, with two other community leaders, Lawrence Lemamu and Victor Akinluwa, were reportedly arrested and detained at Olokuta Maximum Prison since January.

The council alleged, that, Ajijo, having failed to enjoy the support of the entire community to install him as the Ogeleyinbo, resorted to violence and intimidation of the residents of Ayetoro.

The elders accused some top officials of the state government of imposing another person even though the entire community had unanimously chosen and crowned Ojagbohunmi as their monarch.

They pointed out that the people of Ayetoro had been patient because they believed that Governor Akeredolu was unaware of the impunity being inflicted on them by members of his cabinet.

They stated further in their appeal, that, “Since this crisis broke out, our people have suffered unlawful arrests, detention without trial, sponsored attacks by hoodlums, and unknown soldiers attacks with many maimed casualties and damaged properties.
