The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ondo Branch, has elected a new executive to run its affairs in the next two years.
Those elected during the exercise included the Chairman, Thompson Akinyemi, General Secretary, Anthony Oladunjoye, Treasurer, Ms. Omowumi Akinrintan, Finanacial Secretary, E.D. Akpala, Welfare Officer, Sunkanmi Adedeji, and Social Secretary, Ms. Nonso Onyekwelu while a former Editor of Prime People Magazine, poet, literary theorist, university lecturer, politician and environmentalist, McNezer Fasheun was elected Publicity Secretary.
The new executives have concluded arrangements to situate the branch on the map of global practice such that humanity would find justice anywhere in the state.
According to Fasheun: “On the scorecard of the newly elected executive is the idea of launching our branch of the Nigerian Bar Association on the pads of the human products of Ondo City to project a virile law practice that would impact positively on the immediate environment, the nation through the national body of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, the West African Bar Association, WABA, the African Bar Association, ABA, and the International Bar Association, IBA.!
“When we say we were ambitious to make the Ondo City Bar to compete with the New York City Bar, feelers of reaction was that it would be a tall order. But here in Ondo City is where the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria is.
The old Ondo State, now Ondo and Ekiti States, lately demised Chief Frank Akinrele hailed from. Here in this Ondo City is where the world-class stormy petrel of litigation, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi hailed from and countless of the products of this land have done exceptionally well and graduated into the bar of the appellate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of New York.
“ So we believe there is no order too tall for the Ondo City Bar”, he said.
Fasheun said Ondo Branch of the NBA would ensure that “both town-and-gown interface in the Nigerian legal system through concrete scholarly research that would involve the bar and our immediate university communities, as well as enlarge the Nigerian justice system by taking justice to the doorsteps of all and sundry, rich or poor, mighty or lowly.”
He said the Ondo Bar will create awareness regarding the instruments of justice like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UDHR, the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcements), and the Construction of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, CFRN, through the enlightenment of our community.
“We shall, significantly, ensure that both civil and criminal justice systems are used to engineer a better society, even as we shall carry the Nigerian Police and all law enforcement agencies along”, he said adding that they would leave the society better than they met it.
