Lagos-based socio/political activist and critic, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri has condemned in strongest terms, the recent hikes in electricity tariffs and petroleum pump prices.
In a press statement in Lagos yesterday, Chief Onitiri described the hikes as most wicked, unfair and totally unacceptable to the Nigerian people.
“They are anti-people’s policies, directed at further impoverishing the poor masses and the surest way to lead them to their early graves.
“These anti-people’s policies are ill-timed, coming at a time the Covid19 pandemic has dealt a dastardly blow on the people.
“Will these be the palliatives the APC government wants to unleash on the people despite their “change” campaign hype? Is it a crime to be a Nigerian? Certainly no!,” Chief Onitiri said.
He therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse these increases without further delay and save the poor masses from economic strangulation.
The social critic noted that in other climes, governments are dishing out sumptuous packages for their citizens to cushion the devastating effects of the pandemic.
“But our Federal Government in Nigeria is busy adding salts to our open wounds and robbing pepper in our eyes. This is totally unacceptable by the entire Nigerians”, he lamented.
Chief Onitiri noted that the situation now Nigeria is more pathetic. Nigerians can hardly eke a living. Most families can hardly afford a meal a day. Abject poverty is staring over 95% of the populace in the face.
“This is why Nigeria has long become the poverty capital of the world. In all this, our few politicians are swimming in stupendous wealth, and corruption,” explained.

He called on the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to wake up from its slumber and save the poor masses, especially the workers. It should protect and defend the weak and feeble Nigerian masses.
The politico-social activist also called on democratic associations, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and all Human Rigts groups to speak up now and be counted on the side of the people. This is the time to speak up .
“Evil deeds triumph when good people refuse to speak up. Our Youths also should be alive to their responsibilities as future leaders and salvage this country from corruption and other vices.
“We have no other country we can call our own. Nigeria is too much a beautiful country that we can allow few greedy politicians to destroy,” Onitiri added.
