Police rescue abducted ex-INEC commissioner

The abducted former commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Dr Godwin Kwanga has been freed.

Kwanga was abducted on August 31 in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Police spokesperson Kate Anene said the former commissioner was rescued about 10am on Thursday in the Tse-Anjov area of Makurdi where his abductors held him.

Anene added that the hoodlums engaged the police in a shootout but were overpowered, paving the way for the rescue.

She said Kwanga’s Toyota Highlander SUV was recovered the same day he was abducted, adding that the ex-commissioner was rescued unhurt.

One AK47 and two cars were reportedly recovered from the suspects who escaped.

Kwanga, now a lecturer with Benue State University Makurdi, has been reunited with his family, police said.
