The officer whose stray bullet, killed a Mushin trader, Ms. Kudirat Adebayo, has been dismissed and charged to court, Acting Lagos State Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal has said.
The late Adebayo, a mother of four, was killed near the toll gate in Mushin.
The officers were chasing a suspected fraudster when shots targeted at him hit Ms Adebayo, who was preparing yam-cake.
The acting police commissioner said other officers involved in the incident would also face the law.
Edgal, who spoke at a briefing on its resolve to tame officers’ professional misconduct at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, said the information was released late because of communication gap between the force and the family.
The late Adebayo’s family has been pressing for justice.
Last month, prayers marking seven months of her passage were held at the Ogunmokun Railway line near Toll-gate junction where the deceased was shot.
Edgal pledged to always make public the prosecution of wanting operatives to eliminate doubt about justice.
But the deceased son, Adebayo Olorunloye told The Nation yesterday that he was unaware of such prosecution or court judgment.
Joining the widespread online campaign to end the unscrupulous activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, #ENDSARSNOW, Olorunloye via his twitter handle @naijapasito said: “Today is exactly eight months since SARS shot Ms Kudirat Adebayo; the killer has not been brought to book, and the Police/Government have abandoned her family. #EndSARS you can follow up #JusticeForKudi for prove #JH.”
Also reacting to the Nigeria Police Force tweet urging members of the public to report actions and inactions of the operatives to designated platforms, another tweeter user, Chidi Okereke, @Chydee said: “Ms Kudirat Adebayo had contact with SARS, today is eight months since she was killed. We have reported but you people have done nothing. Don’t piss me off. #EndSARS.”
According to Olorunloye, letters seeking justice had been forwarded through the family lawyer to the office of the Commissioner.
The letters, he said, suffered inaction as it never elicited response.
“I’m hearing this for the first time. I’ll call my lawyer to confirm,” Olorunloye said.
