The trigger-happy policeman, who allegedly injured a commercial driver and passengers in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has been arrested and disarmed by the command.
It was learnt that the policeman, who was guarding a new generation bank, but allegedly shot the driver for parking his vehicle in front of the bank, would face orderly room trial.
A statement by police spokesman Asinim Butswat said that the Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel had been detained following suspicion of discreditable conduct and unlawful use of firearm.
He said following the order of Commissioner Uche Anozia, the suspect was detained at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department in Yenagoa.
He said: “The unfortunate incident leading to his arrest happened on January 6 when a PMF personnel on duty at a leading commercial bank in Yenagoa, had an altercation with a driver of a commercial bus over parking rights. In the ensuing argument, the policeman allegedly pulled the trigger of his rifle and injured the driver and others.
“Operatives of the command, who responded to the incident, took the injured to hospital. They are responding to treatment.
“The police commissioner has condemned the shooting. He called for calm.
“Sympathising with the victims, their families, relations and friends, he promised that the case would be investigated and the indicted persons would be brought to book.”
Butswat, however, said that a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was not one of the victims.
