A Deputy Director, Ministry of Education, Lagos State, Mrs. Agbai Olugu Ugo, has advised pupils to promote peace rather than be agents of destruction.
She gave the advice during the yearly peacebuilding seminar organised by Rotary Clubs of Gbagada, Gbagada South, Ogudu GRA and Oregun at Immaculate Heart Secondary, Maryland, Lagos.
It was attended by over 50 pupils from 20 schools from the Education District. They included Ojota Secondary School, Ogudu Senior Grammar School, Somolu Senior High School, and Baptist High School.
Olugu, who was the guest speaker, explained that peacebuilding is a long-term process, as the people affected must be made to talk, and tarnished relationships repaired. She said all should be involved in the process and that it was wrong for parents and leaders to exclude the youth from peace talks.
She said: “To build peace, everyone must be involved. It should not be parents alone. Get to the root causes of the problem and it would be resolved.”
Earlier, the President of Rotary Club of Gbagada, Sola Ogunsola told the youthful audience that there was the need to prepare youths for leadership. He said Rotary attaches importance to peace because it believes it is better to avoid conflicts.
