Rains wash off roads in Niger

A TWO-DAY heavy downpour has caused the collapse of some major roads in Niger State.

One of the affected roads is the Minna-Bida road which has collapsed in several sections, making driving difficult.

Several homes and farmlands were submerged in the flood where properties valued at millions of Naira have been lost.

Worst affected is the road before Sabon Gada on the Minna-Bida road, almost cut off save for the efforts of youths who took to filling the broken sections.

Several drivers were seen urging others to take alternative routes while a resident who spoke to The Nation at Sabon Gada, Musa Aliyu said he had to help fill the collapsed spots when there was massive hold up causing discomfort drivers and commuters.

He said the government needed to intervene immediately as another round of heavy rain would lead to the total collapse of the roads which even the youths’ would not be able to salvage.

However, the Niger State Government has announced the restriction of movement of articulated vehicles across roads in the state from September 15.

The roads where these restrictions would be effective include Minna-Bida, Lapai-Paiko, Lapai-Muye, the entrance of Zungeru-Wushishi, and Chanchaga Bridge-Maikunkele.
