Life isn’t always a cakewalk, and it wasn’t that way for Reggery Gravenbeek from Rotterdam-Zuid. Although he is now a rising filmmaker as well as a part of the Team Enkelband organization, he’s had his share of rough patches.
He started his life on the wrong side of the city and soon got involved in street crimes that eventually landed him in prison. However, he took that setback as a challenge to transform his life and contribute to shaping the future minds of his city.
Reggery Gravenbeek: Early life
Born in the district of Zuidwijk in Rotterdam, Reggery Gravenbeek started as a bright child with interest in sports. However, his life took a drastic turn when he was stabbed in an unfortunate incident. He embarked upon a journey to seek revenge but soon took to other crimes as well.
He was known to deal drugs and weapons. In addition to that, he was accused of shooting someone, which landed him in a 12-year prison sentence. However, owing to good behavior, he was released after just seven years.
Journey to the Showbiz
After he was released from prison, Reggery Gravenbeek had two options. He would have either gone back to his old life or to start over. He decided to transform his life. He was then contacted by a friend in the filmmaking business who offered him the role of an extra when the original candidate backed out at the last moment. And that’s how his acting career began!
In his short-lived acting career, he had a supporting role in the movie Guys Night and had a guest appearance in the episode “Teach Hustling”. However, he soon realized that acting wasn’t his real calling. It was the work behind the camera that enchanted him.
His first work as a filmmaker was in 2017 when Hans Groenendijk gave him the opportunity to participate in a 48-hour project film in Rotterdam. Again, it looks like luck was on his side because he was invited only because a team backed out at the last moment. The movie he made was titled Stalker, and he played the lead. His brilliant work received widespread appreciation along with an audience choice award.
He made a film supported by a project undertaken by the Judiciary. The name of the film is De Druk. The film speaks about the hardships faced by misled youth deciding to live on the streets and be subjected to rising street crimes. No one could tell this story better than Reggery Gravenbeek himself.
While it’s true that life isn’t always fair, it’s up to you to decide how you use the events of your life.
